I found a 12R on Craigslist in Oregon the price is really good. I was wondering are their any particular bad things about the 2006 model year bikes? I have a M2 that I have put 40,000 miles on in 4 years. I have ridden an XB a total of once so I'm not sure what I'm getting into.

I've got an '06 XB12Ss that now has over 42K on the clock. Here's my list of issues that I keep current on my profile page...

The fan was bad sounding from day one. Wheel bearings and the #77 connector (voltage regulator connector) seem like the weak points to me. There's an upgrade kit for the #77 connector for a permanent fix. Wheel bearings seem like a crap shoot. The current wheel bearing failure looks like water intrusion and it failed a week after some nasty rain riding while on a trip.

I'm curious on the wheel bearings if you had done anything to them. I have a 2009 xb12ss, and when I change tires (twice so far), I popped the cover off and worked in some Mobil1 grease in the hope of preventing that problem.

Not a thing other than check if they turn smoothly when changing rubber.

I did manage to limp it home from over 80 miles away when the rear started clicking and squealing enough to be heard over the wind & engine noise. I stopped at a small garage that loaned me a small screwdriver and a can of PB Blaster. Pried the seal enough to get the straw in and PB Blasted it. It ran quietly again for over 70 of my 80+ miles going home. It was in really bad shape by then though. Rusty water came out once the wheel was set down on it's side.

I'm torn between trying to maintain a "maintenance free" bearing as you do vs. the risk of damaging the seal and dooming the bearings. I'm thinking it may not be bad to add this to the 5K service list.

I have orange seal bearings, and when I change the rubber out (500 miles or so). I'm going to change the bearings too. They have 22k on them, and it's time to do a maintenance job. Some high quality stuff is what I would do. Not many people have tried ceramics. If the longevity is there, I would throw the extra $. Standard replacements are cheap. Swap em out, and drill the little hole in the hub to drain the water. Don't be worried about poppin' the seals and lubin them babies up! If you do it regularly, they will last a long time.

If you get bearings from Boca, you can get the side shields that or removable and just plan on cleaning and fresh lube every year.
