Hows it going all, I am currently going through and fixing up/upgrading different parts on my 05 XB9R. I have been looking through lately trying to figure what the preferred size cam's to get were that would fit my bike without any need for extra drilling, and wondering if with said cams, a K and N and a Jardine RT-1 with a tuned Erik Buell Racing Race ecm would it be enough to make up for the overall 11% increase on my gearing ratio from http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A17151.html ?

Edit: Also is there anything else i should replace if i were to do a cam and gearing swap?

I just want to make sure you understand what this primary gearing swap will do. The 11% increase will give you more top end speed and low end torque will suffer. I don't know why anyone would want to do the swap on the XB9.

If you want more low end torque, do the chain conversion. Then you can go with 21 tooth front sprocket and a 50 tooth rear.

So I've heard with the primary swap which is why I'm hesitant and decided I'd use the mass brain of that which is badweb. As i watch more videos on bikes with it, and get more opinions on the matter I'm not as game for it as i previously was a few days ago when someone suggested it.

I'm still wanting to swap out the Cams, I am just wondering on specifics on that I have been trolling the forums a bit for it and have done searches but I have yet to find anything of worth to my bike.

That's Ruckus a CCS/Daytona USA racer (#21/721) I bought 2 years ago. 96 rwhp is made with the following shopping list.

millenium 3 13/16" jugs and pistons/
XB 9 crank/
stage 3 heads w/ 1.9 intake and 1.6 exhaust/
sledge hammer comp valve springs/
stock XB12 TBI and injectors/
XB12 stock cams, plastic pushrod boxes, stock rods and rockers/
any pipe w/ a water buffalo head pipe design into a small can/ it had a Ti Beson which was sold

I was reading about an XB12 crank swap retaining the XB9 pistons which have a slight dome to them. Bore dia. is the same. Compression bumps up to nearly 12:1 and no issues with 91 octane pump gas. Go to a XB12 ECU and TBI and you should be good to go. A remap with ECMSPy would also work to richen it up for the extra ccs saving you money.

Mine has no trouble with single wheel salutes and is running 21/50 520 gearing. 21/47 or 48 is said to be good for 150+. Well into the 130+mph 'quiet zone' that is so strange, yet so like a sirens call.

The gearing change from a 9 primary to a 12 would give you a reduced RPM on the highway and keeping a few RPM down in the city. Depending on how you ride it may be a smoother ride for you, or it may not be right due to the above reasons. Eventually I will put the 12 primary on my 9, it think it will work well for the way I ride on the streets.

XB1221: The information you posted was overtly helpful, and now I'm slowly looking through the different things i can do to get to where I want to be with my bike

Greg_e: As it is now I'm thinking it may reduce my fun in the twisties but I honestly don't know until i talk to someone who has actually done the mod. I've seen videos of some reduction in power but then again, i don't know if they have any type of engine work done at all.

Update to the current Cam questions, will the RED SHIFT 630/585 High Torque Cams work sufficiently without a bored or mount on CC increase to the Engine, and without a ported Head? Or as I am Praying, will i be able to throw them in with only the K & N and Jardine and notice a significant increase in power throughout? Or will i need to go the extra mile and get a Stage 1-3 Job done on my engine?

Xb1221 who tuned your bike and what gas? 96hp with engine mods seems kind of weak. My bolt on XB9 (open air kit, micron, xb12 throttle body and intake manifold, and a dyno tune) made over 90whp.

I doubt there will be much of any gains just from the cams without all the other work too. In order to take advantage of cams you will really need head work done. You should also go with a larger throttle body, at least up to the 12 TB which is 1 or 2 mm wider. You might want to put on the 12 headers too, they are a larger diameter. The 12 TB and headers will raise the peak torque point up the RPM curve so you will need to rev it higher to get to the sweet spot.

And after all that work, might as well machine the engine case and put in a big bore short stroke kit or change over to the 12 crank and rods to stroke the motor into a bigger displacement but keep the 9 pistons to give you higher compression.

Bike was built down at Innovative Motorcycle Research in Salem, NJ. After the bike was bought the quest for what toy prices might still be in the motor started. I called the shop looking for those answers. Dude down their had an off the cuff answer of 96 rwhp and wouldn't ellude as to what was left inside the motor.
The 96rwhp was at unknown gearing also. Tracks usually ran 21 47/48 gearing and might also pull the numbers lower. I've had the 21/50 gearing on it since I bought it, though I may change to a 47 and 48 just to see how close to 160 I can get with it.

Walt's bike makes 118rwhp as an 88" at an unknown compression. Mine was 96 with an unknown fuel, ECU map, 520 gearing....etc. Lots of variables influencing that number. I have not dynoed the bike as yet. I can get CAM2 here and could consider that option when I do. It might be down on HP to benefit the torque #s for the track as built...not sure.

I've chatted some with Walt Sipp about the bike and some of the history of these bikes and he thought mid-90 rear wheel was about right for these with the 3.1 crank, stock cams and the 1170 kits added to these.

Rwhp numbers are only have the story. Without balancing them against the torque number we really don't have the whole picture.
