The idea is that it provides a layer of insulation to cut down the heat radiating to your right leg. It's also said that it can increase horsepower slightly; retaining the heat in the exhaust gases is beneficial to exhaust scavenging.

Is there a certain wrap that is better than others?

Most use DEI header wrap.

If you can afford it ceramic coating does a lot more than header wrap and is maintenance free.

Basically for me is saves my textile riding clothes from becoming trash from momentary contact, those pipes get really hot! The DEI Titanium is what they recommend, you do not paint the Titanium wrap. If you use the painted regular wrap, you may burn all of the paint off, especially if you use their white color.

It blocks radiative heat entirely. You'll know what I'm talking about if you ever right a Buell with flat black headers. Shiny metal pipes do the same.

The wrap also greatly reduces the surface temperature which helps with convective heat and also protects riding gear.

I've not wrapped the Uly yet, but plan too. The Cyclone is always wrapped.

Not so much. I had my headers coated by Jet Hot, ruined a nice pair of riding pants on them and burned a hole in my jacket liner.

Won't happen with the wrap.

It also prevent burned hands when you reach it to work on something and slip, the wrap gives you just enough time to pull away before a burn starts.

There are those that have burned clothes on headers and there are those that will burn clothes on headers.

Champ I think you are referring to the "Those that have dropped their bike and those that will".

You can avoid burning things on the headers but in certain circumstances you can't avoid dropping or laying the bike down.

Having tried both DEI wrap + DEI paint, then ceramic coating on the same bike and headers, I can honestly say that ceramic coating is much more effective at reducing heat outside of the header.

That being said, I happened to opt for the shiny silver ceramic coating on my X1 which I've since been told is much more effective than the flat black. There was a whole thread about the differences over in BB&D where Al used some terms I won't pretend to understand. Long story short - I trust Al and will be going with the shiny silver ceramic coating again when I end up doing the Uly headers - even thought black would look better on that bike.

Wrapping also hides any dings in the headers when you try to sell the bike.

Why not black? it's a thing called emissivity, or what I think Blake was referring to as radiative heat. Emissivity is the relative ability of a body to radiate heat. Dull black is the hottest, polished silver is about as low as you can get.

I know about flat black. The PO of my S2T painted the headers flat, super-dark charcoal. They are cruel pipes.

Shiny pipes definitely radiate less heat than dark and/or flat ones.

I had an S3 before my Uly, and when I got it the pipes were pretty nasty looking. After I'd had it a few months, I spent about a day polishing the pipes with fine sandpaper and metal polish.

Not only did it make the headers look nice, it made a HUGE difference in the amount of heat radiating from them. So, if you don't like the way wrap looks and you don't have money to have them coated, just polish them. It really helps.
