Hi again, I tried to update my previous post but I can not find it anymore... so here we are again.

As many of you know We have start a new project. The BOTT XR-1 based on a Buell, which donors the wheels, suspensions, brakes, engine and swingarm. We aim to create a motorbike with flattrack look from the Harley XR 750 racers. To build this bike we had to design a central spine chassis. After the idea came up, David Sanchez from Bottpower is in charge of designing the frame and other main bike components. Bottpower is a highly experienced engineering company specialized in racing (The built and race their own Moto2).

The Harley XR1200 is the most similar thing you can find on the market, but while the HD weights 250 kgs and has 85 HP, the BOTT XR-1 will weight 170 kgs, having more than 100 HP and much more aggressive geometries.

Once the project is finished, and due to the number of mails received and the interest raised, we may prepare a kit for converting a XB to a Bott.

The engine render:

We are keeping the XB throttlebody. However it has to be rotated and then moved 90 degrees to the right. The intake bolts also have to be slightly modified. Finally, an adequate airfilter and support has to be added.

Not so bad? ; )

How will the functions of the tielinks that restrict the direction of the shaking be duplicated?

We are using the same XB engine mounts, front and rear. The frame holds the engine from this two mounts. Then we are using two tie bars, one in the rear and another on the top in order to avoid lateral movements and ad rigidity.

The frame is prepare to use a third tie bar on the front, however, we are right now testing if this is necessary, because without it the desing is cleaner.

In case this third tie bar is really needed, this tie bar will be atached to the little cilinders that you can see in the front of the frame.

Regards.

"We are keeping the XB throttlebody. However it has to be rotated and then moved 90 degrees to the right. The intake bolts also have to be slightly modified."

This won´t work as the angles of the throttlebody will not fit to the heads any more after You rotate and tilt it. Try it and You will see what I mean. Nevertheless You can use an X1 injection system or go for a carb.
Nice project.

Thanks Strato9r for the compliments.

Hi Alex, I think that you know Jens. We contact him when he came down here for testing a couple of months ago and we explained him about this project.

What I mean is that starting from the original throttlebody position, facing up and with the injectors to the right side, you have to rotate the throttlebody 180 degrees, so the injectors are now on the left side and the throttlebody still facing up. Then, the throttlebody (upper side) has to be rotated now 90 degrees to the right, so now the angles perfectly match the cilinder head angle. The only thing is that you have to machine a bit both intake metal rings (that hold the seals and intake) as there is no place for adjusting the bolts.

The only difference then, is that the injectors end up laying few degrees more than the original position, and I have to check if this affects the fuel map and the injectors spraying.

And advice would be highly appreciated regarding this issue.

Thanks

Hi Ramon,

yes I do know Jens. I´m the engine builder of the Pegasusraceteam.

I know exactly what You want to do with the stock throttlebody but trust me on this one: it won´t fit.
Of course it will fit in between the cylinder heads somehow but not as it is supposed to be. If You mount the throttlebody to one head only You will clearly see that the other side of the manifold will not be parallel to the head mounting surface and the throttlebody will not be perpendicular to the engine axis. It will point slightly towards the other cylinder.
The reason is that the heads (read manifold mounting surfaces) face each other with a different angle than the 45° cylinder angle. I could make some drawing for better explanation but I lack of time and experience in posting pictures. I´m sure You will find out on Your own when You look at it.
I wouldn´t worry about the injector position affecting the fuel map as I would make a specific map for that engine anyway (the "Forcewinder" intake will change cylinder filling and of course if You want to build a 100+ hp engine You should make an individual map anyway. If it was my project I would build a short stroke engine for it).

Regards

Hi Alex,

I agree that two good options are the carburetor and the X1 TB (trottlebody). However we wanted to keep the XB TB in order to make it simple while we test the frame. Later, its still to be decided what to use. All options have pros and cons.

Carburetor: many fans for that, nice feeling, less problems but more difficult to set up and...

X1 TB: I already got one to test few things. The body internal diameter is too low and making it bigger has a limit which is less than the original XB. Also the injectors are smaller...

XB TB: in order ot start testing the bike is easier and cheaper as we only have to fit it right. ECM is prepared for it. I know that the AFR may change but the ecm AFV may compensate that.

This is the XB TB in its original position on the XB bike:

tb1

Here the XB TB in the position on the Bott XR-1:

tb2

And here we can see the XB TB on Bott XR-1 position and the X1 TB intake manifold:

tb3

I have check the angles from the first two pictures, up-down and right-left, and in both pictures are practically the same. However, when you place the TB facing 90 degrees to the right, you can modify the angles a bit moving the TB head a bit up or down. The only thing is that the ring bolt has to be modified.

Now that we will have the frame finish we will move to the next step, engine set up.

+1 on the kit.

From a quick glance, a basic kit looks like it would consist of main frame, subframe, intake conversion, and optional gas tank. Looks like almost any flat track tank would be possible.

This would be the no-brainer economical solution to the insurance-totaled bikes with a tiny frame dent. Awesome work!

Illbuell, we are still finishing the first prototipe. One the tests finish, kits will be prepared.

Tbolt_pilot, it may be different options, but lets see,

You can send a message in this link and you will be contacted as the process finishes.

I know the can is under the bike for mass centralization... but any chance of a set of left side high pipes ala the original XR750? .... cool looks, plus I NEED that ground clearance. (and the light renderings look great....lic plate and mirrors and I will start the withdraw from retirement funds !)

Hi Cityxslicker. As the initial idea is to use XB base, we are using the low exhaust. However, the ground clearance is 4", so no problem using side pipes. Some of them really look great : )

but any chance of a set of left side high pipes ala the original XR750?

The main restriction on running high pipes on the XB has always been the frame layout, but this BOTT kit will allow high pipes easily I would think.
However, running them on the left side would be difficult simply because the exhaust ports are on the right and there is little space available to cross the pipes over to the other side of the bike without looking bad or getting in the way.

A set of high pipes on the right would look good though, and I'm pretty sure something from an XR1200 or current XL Sportster would fit straight on : ) Like this perhaps ....

Hi Trojan, thanks for the suggestion. This pipes would be great, however by doing so we should adjust the suspension settings and the bike high.

By the way, nice bike!

I like both of the small light options. The big light looks weird.

I had the idea when I first saw the XB9S that headlights and guages could go in the same 'tube'. The dual lights, up high in front of the bars with the tach and speedo right behind each of them. Then there is plenty of room for a 'number' on the 'number plate'.

Keep up the great work! I'm following this bike very closely...well, the idea of a bike.

Hi again;

Another big step on XR-1 Project.

The frame is almost done. One the frame was designed, has been prepared and welded. Everything smooth as planned. No steps back. The shock mount is ready to be welded.

Doh, you put the wrong bearings in the head tube.
I'm opinionated today. So, I may as well say; The option for head lights that I vote for is not there. I vote for option #5. The one with 2 high beams and 2 low beams, Laid out in a square.

Ourdee, the idea is using as many parts as possible from the XB, however many can be found on the market.

So far, we may start using option 1 for headlamps.

We already have the bike with main parts on place. Soon we will start with details and paint.
