I did a search for oil leaks but didn't find any info relevant to my question. I am riding an 04 XB12R with 35K+ miles.
I recently noticed an oil leak coming from around the oil pump area. I checked all the fittings and all but one seemed to be tight. The fitting that didn't appear to be tight was the 90 degree elbow that comes from the return line into the pump, up by the top of the oil filter. The steel line connecting to the elbow was tight but the elbow appears to be a swivel fitting as it would move several degrees in an arc. Am I imagining things or is this fitting indeed a swivel fitting? I took a closer look and cannot see any threads on the male side of the fitting going into the oil pump. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Nope- it's a pipe thread elbow that screws into the oil pump. Your best bet is to disconnect the steel line and remove the elbow. Clean the male pipe threads and coat them with teflon pipe thread sealant and reinstall. The trick is to just tighten the elbow until it's tight AND it's "clocked" (rotated) where it needs to be. You can't back off to adjust it or it'll leak. If it's not completely tight when you get to the right position, you have to make another full turn. If it gets TOO tight before it's back to the correct position, you can strip the threads or crack the oil pump.

Yea, it's a PITA. THAT's why they did away with these fittings on the 08-up XB's.
