Has anyone installed a Shorai LiFePO4 Battery in their XB? They've got one that weighs just a few pounds, cost <$200, has 270CCA, and is supposed to last twice as long as a regular batterry.

A guy I know who worked on helicopters in the Army said these types of batterries are indestructable and I am really thinking about trying one out. If you have a positive or negstive experience, I would like to know.

Thanks,

clang

I wouldn't say indestructible, but that price is getting down to where I might think about it. Most places still want $400+.

That said they could be using junk cells which accounts for the low price. There are good cells and bad cells, the bad ones never really hit their ratings and usually last about half as long as the good ones so it may be a crap shoot. If they make them out of genuine A123 cells then it should be a good buy.

$154 for an XB:

Wish I had seen these last fall when I bought my new factory battery, might have given it a try for the extra $60 in price.

Shorai had a booth at the Chicago IMS. It was amazing how light the battery is. May get one this year.

Well - I took the chance and ordered one from motomummy.com. I got the "Duration" Recommended battery LFX18A1-BS12 for $165 shipped. 270CCa vs 210CCA for the standard replacement. List price is $187.

I'll provide a report after I get it installed.

Just a Quick update - my new Shorai battery arrived today. It is SMALL and LIGHT. Had to use a lot of the included foam panels to fit into the original battery position, I bet with some thought, you can set this up to give yourself a good amount of extra room if you figured out a new way to secure the battery.

Bike started up fine and performed very well with the new battery. Time will tell if it is worth while.

Can you tell if it has some kind of charging circuit built into it? Without one, I think all these cells will work for a while, but be doomed to a fairly short lifespan.

If you look at the manufacturer site, they do say it has a special balance charging circuit to make sure it does not explode.

If it performs nearly as good as the stock battery, then it should be worth it. Certainly gives racers a cheaper source of removing weight.

I received a PM asking for an update on my Shorai LFX18A1-BS12 battery.

So far - so good. I really don't get to ride much - a couple thousand miles/yr (too much to do with the kids right now), but every time I've started my bike I've had no issues and the Shorai battery turns over the bike more strongly than the original battery ever did. I am very happy with this battery so far.

Pleae note the model of the battery I purchased. It was originally considered the high power alternative and a lower CCA battery was the standard replacement. Shorai now recommends this battery as the standard replacement.
