i live out in the country with no lights and lots of deer! i avoid riding at night due to the deer and other creatures, but i do tend to ride in the dark more than i would like, thats the reason i'm wanting better lights, and the brighter they are the better! 
with that being said i haven't ruled out any brand yet.
the way i understand it the lights you are using greg_e are the older style of the hella's you posted, is that correct or no?
if i'm wrong, and you are using the same ones you posted, how hard were they to mount up (what type of bracket did you make/use?)
and still curious about the H9 bulbs that come with the hella's, do they or do they not have to be H3 for my 9R?... |

The lights I am using are basically a new style and each fixture flips between low and high so I will always have twice the light out in front of me, plus the much better reflector and lens should add up to more light than many cars on the road.
The ones I linked are an older single pattern fixture, but it has been used by a few members so it is tried and tested and approved by those users. Considering that one of them said he compared them to HID in stock fixtures and had more light with the Hella I think it should be a better choice. Mounting them takes some work as you can see from my lights thread, the HID will plug right in after the wiring changes so the HID are probably much easier to deal with over all.
Part of it is my personal preference, the HID route just seems like a kluge to me. It gets a job done, but doesn't really do it better.
I would suggest looking at the steps I've gone through because the lights I linked here have the same mechanical needs where you have to put in a mount and trim the fairing, but with the 65 watt lamp you should be able to use the stock wiring if your really wanted to save time.

Pete and Steve both have the lights I linked above which is one low beam and one high beam similar to how the stock lights are done. They both say they get more light than a stock fixture with HID lamp.
Since the DDM are $60 for the pair that might have to do for a while, you are definitely looking at more than that for a pair of Hella, I just think the Hella are a better and more legal choice since they are DOT certified. If you don't like the DDM you can probably sell them and not lose too much money so it might make a good start. If you can find someone near you so you can look at the HID output it might be a good idea.
Or you can tell Chicago Harley to get HD on the phone and get me my damn relay block terminals before I give up and use an external relay which is not the way I want to go. Then I might be able to tell you what to expect with the really expensive way that I'm going (but still not the most expensive way). |

Greg. Not everyone cares if the lights are 100% legal. I have 3 bikes and 2 trucks that have an HID upgrade. Thy are perfect to upgrade to if your not looking to go overboard on a headlights mod. I've never been pulled over in any of my vehicles because of the lights. They do an excellent job puking light a long way down the road even before I turn on the brights. While your idea is a great one, I believe its overkill for 99.9% of owners out there. |

Did all my "winter mods" today...new drive belt, fluids n filters, and a new set of Q2's..tires were on sale at Cycle Gear.
First set of tires I have changed myself in quite some time. (Tire machine broken at Cycle Gear)....next set I will have a good tire changer of my own...Afterwards I rode about 60 miles to heat cycle the tires.
My first impression for the tires is very good...turn in is exceptionally good and they hold the line well...I will be faster on them than the Corsa III's I have always run before....the bike feels lighter in transition.
"Mod" time is over...tomorrow is my Sunday club ride....and next weekend is the Buell group ride....and....and |

after I'm done with all that, I'll probably be done modding for the winter, being poor sucks!
but i still think I am going to go with the DDM lights, they are cheap, and seems like they have been tested by a few on here, and seem to be a decent product. I personally dont care if they are 100% legal, I'd rather explain to the officer that I got them b/c i feel safer with them than end up sliding into a ditch because of a deer i didnt see. |

I just bought a house so I won't be able to do anything to the bike for a while. I think I am about done with it anyhow besides some tuning and exhaust work. One good thing about Louisiana is I can ride year round!
HID from DDM is the way to go. If you need any help with the wiring don't be afraid to ask. JeepinBuellers write up on HID wiring and my write up on the timer relay should help out a bit. |
