im sitting here debating on weather an 09 xb9 motor will work in my 03 xb9 and i cant come up with why it wouldnt. it will physically fit.

as far as electronics i know there are differences, but if i keep the 03 stuff it should be fine correct? even if i have to, say, use the 03 throttle body/injectors and such on the new motor.

is there something im drawing a blank on currently? and i am pretty sure its already been done. i know it has on some race bikes, but obviously those arent completely intact in the first place.

im fairly sure i couldnt use the 09 fuel setup(throttle body and such and still run my 03 ecm(which i will not go without) because of those changes.

It is more than the throttle body thats different. One bike reads timing off the crank, the other off the cam. The only practical way to get the 09 motor to work would be to use the entire wiring harness, including ECM.

Shawn, do I need to come up this weekend and pick your bike apart and fix it in 5 minutes?

(I've been reading your threads, I got suspicions on the issue, ECM is my guess)

I was thinking the wiring harness when warmed up has a break on it that occasionally causes the ECM to lose power for a moment, then kick back on and run normal. At least that was my guess based on what I've seen you post. Problem is there is no easy way to trouble shoot it, it can still easily pass the wiggle the wires test.

You will have to make up some oil lines too. Engine connections are going to be different, and I'm pretty sure the newer swing arm had different connections from your '03. No stock lines to fit your needs. Nothing insurmountable, but be prepared.

except id be able to have this one for 1/4 the price! and the motor is barely broken in yet. thats the only reason i was considering it.

i wouldnt be opposed to using the new stuff on my old bike, but i do not want to lose my map. and even though i suck with the ecm tuning stuff, i am fairly sure i can not transfer an 03 map into an 09 ecm.

I highly doubt that an 03 DDFI-2 map would work on a 09 DDFI-3 ecm...

The DDFI2 map definitely will not work with the DDFI3 setup...8 bit vs. 16 bit tables. The DDFI3 is CANbus protocol as compared to the serial type on the DDFI2. Basically, like Froggy said, you need the harness and ECM to be complete. In all honesty, although tuning is more finicky, DDFI3 has much more tuning potential than DDFI2, so if I had to pick...

In addition to getting more resolution out of your maps (which is reason enough to want the new setup), the ECM can also be configured to give launch control in neutral, electronic shift interrupt for clutchless upshifts, and if you add a bung and O2 sensor, you can run both cylinders in closed loop.

If you can get a good deal, I say go for it! Forget about your map and start fresh. You're getting a better control system, a more robust crank and transmission, and I'd surmise an engine with fewer miles.

nope, it(and all the bikes) escaped the flood damage. they were luckily sitting at the womans house in her garage. which is odd because i usually atleast keep one at my place.

anywho, the 9 still runs like a raped ape, but the main shaft bearing is going out of it. i can grab the front pulley and wiggle things around(not cool) so instead of running it till it trashes everything, its just sitting and waiting. when its apart it needs new swingarm bearings(the only reason i noticed the main shaft bearing in the first place was because i was tearing down to fix those) also needs a new oil pressure sensor(starting to leak) and a rear shock rebuild.

Well that kind of sucks. At least it hasn't completely been torn up though. That leaves you with some options.

My unsolicited, and free advice would be to at least tear it down and get a good estimate on what it would take to freshen up the current motor. You are certainly in the right place to have access to good advice when needed. Might even be able to bargain for some of the more specialized labor. It's a great chance to get a nice fresh motor that you know the history on instead of one you install with fingers crossed. I assume there's upgrades available for some of the weaker points of the older XB's, like the main bearings. Even if not there's nothing like a fresh, blueprinted motor to play with.

Good luck with what ever path you choose. The swap to the '09 mill sounds like more headache than it's worth to me, unless you really trust that motor to be rock solid, and the price is really right.
