All,

I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for a primary gear swap on my 09 Ss. Looking at the service manual, it looks like I need the XB9 (08+, I think) gears and chain, as well as a new primary cover gasket, clutch cover gasket, shifter lever oil seal, adjusting screw assembly retaining ring (I'm assuming they mean the big ring, not the smaller one in the assembly) as well as the locking link. However, I noticed there are two HD part numbers; one for XB9 and one for the XB12. I'm assuming they are different lengths? If so, will I need one to remove the XB12 gears and another to install the XB9 parts? I was planning on making my own, so if anyone has the dimensions for the XB9 link, I'd appreciate it. I think I have the numbers for the 12 laying around somewhere...

Put a wrap of electrical tape over the splines on the shifter shaft to help protect the seal if you don't want to replace it.

Thanks guys. Guess I need some Loctite 271 as well. Maybe use this as an excuse to get a bigger torque wrench...

Couple of last questions - what size sockets are needed for the nuts holding the gears, and is there any reason that I can't adjust chain tension prior to putting the primary cover back on? Seems like it would be easier with the cover off.

big ones : D my primary cover is off still, if no one else chimes in I'll check the sizes tomorrow when I'm near my bike.

it would be difficult to adjust the chain with the cover off- the adjuster is on the cover. ; )

Doh! I thought the adjuster was on the engine case. Yep, just looked at the parts manual. You're right again, Andy.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread - does anyone have the sizes of the nuts for the gears? Want to make sure I have the right tools. Thanks!

If the sizes are the same as my tuber, the sockets are 1 3/16 for the crank and 1 1/8 for the clutch basket side.

Also, DON'T remove the clutch before trying to remove the drive components. DAMHIK. : |

Thanks FB. I'd asked American Sport Bike as well (since they have the kit) and Al told me the newer bikes have a 13/16" hex head stretch bolt on the rotor side. Clutch side is the same.
