I just brought my "new" 08' XB12 Scg home yesterday!! Got an good deal; 2200 miles, garaged, and looks brand new. It has an Special O.P.S. muffler, everything else is bone stock. 1000 mile svc reported, still running harley 20-50W. My question is will just the exaust cause A LOT of decel backfiring and popping without a custom ECM?(cause its there) I don't want to damage this thing. I believe this can has retained the factory "valve" (?) Also, I'm new to XB models, so please point me to a good posts about when/how to correctly check and change engine and case fluids? Thanks in advance guys!

The stock 08 ECM should be just fine with the exhaust. If you find it starting to run rough you can always do a tps reset, but that really shouldn't be necessary...

Yes, most performance mufflers do pop on deceleration. From what I have seen there are two main causes, first is the normal tendency for a higher flow muffler to make the exhaust gases lean. Second is that often the front pipe fitting will not be 100% sealed allowing for air to get in and exhaust gas to leak.

Usually making sure there is no black carbon leak tracing around the front pipe clamp, and going to the race ECM where the maps are tuned to the pipe will fix most of the popping on deceleration.

I had a Buell race pipe on a '05 City-X with the race ECM and the air filter kit, and even after tuning it would still do it a little bit. None at all with the stock pipe.

Not sure if you need to be registered but the OFFICIAL Buell.com site still has all the OWNERS manuals online:

Mine will pop some on decel but after I ride it a while it pretty much stops doing it. It's like the ECM adjusts for conditions and makes the pop stop.

I rode it around town yesterday, and man the backfiring is WAY bad. I also noticed "stuttering" at any constant cruise speed. I hate to think I may have to garage it until I get the ECM, K&N, and reset the TPS, but I don't want to burn a valve either. Didn't think I would see such issues with a "new" bike and slight muffler change! Thanks for the comments, and keep em coming if you have more input.

Get the Erik Buell Racing ECU a Pro-Series or K-N filter. 0 popping, not running lean, better performance. I have an '08 scg with a Pro-Series, Special Ops, and Erik Buell Racing ECU. The bike and myself are happy as can be.
