Did a repair job on a broken Micron Serpent pipe for a guy over the weekend. Almost all the welds inside it were broken, only one 3/4" long weld held the tubing/crossover to the front plate. The perf core tubes were broke away, packing pretty much blown out and disappearing fast. He also wanted a set of O2 sensor bungs put on the midpipes.

I was somewhat suprised to see the internal welds so short, they didn't even go most of the way around the tubing and they looked like they were just blobbed on in a hurry. Huge gaps in the front plate, you could see the blow-by out the front. It's pretty solid now, should last for a while.

Yeah, that's daylight you see in the next pic.

Post repairs on the internals, ready for packing material now.

It might not be beautiful, but it will certainly hold up now.

Edit, forgot the O2 bungs.

Odie, if all you plan on doing is sheetmetal and exhaust tubing, there are several inverter tig units that work well. I have a friend that is a pipe fitter that specializes in food grade stainless...his tig is a Miller that is not much bigger than a lunch box...I am without a tig at the moment...mine got blasted during a thunderstorm a few weeks back...I'll most likely get a new miller water-cooled...

Odie, I figured you already had one. I've got the little STL 150 miller stick/tig unit. I'm looking to upgrade eventually, I've had several requests to do aluminum, which this one won't do since it's a DC welder. I got this one because it was so small. 14 lbs for the welder, maybe 45-50 lbs for everything in the box. I've got maybe $2100-2200 invested in it and it's about 8 or 10 months old now. It does everything I've needed up to this point, but aluminum is the kicker now. Either I just bite the bullet and buy another welder outright, or sell this one and get a much larger unit. I just had extra service ran out to the garage (60 amps) so I can go fairly large now.

:-)

I'm just using my Lincoln SP-175Plus MIG right now. Does a great job but I would really like a TIG. This is what I almost pulled the trigger on last year. Around $2100 with a cart. Maybe I can get it for myself for Christmas!!

Those inverter rigs are nice. They seem to be a little more expensive though. I like buying once and done these days.

I've seen the cheaper inverter welders for as low as $400 new, but I just can't convince myself to buy the china/taiwan knockoffs, even at that price. I almost bought a miller 150 on ebay, but most of them at the time went up to $1000. For another $400-500, I got a brand new one. Had to buy a bottle, new helmet, foot pedal and various other accessories though, so it went over $2000 in a hurry. Best $$ I've spent in a while.

I have a MillerMatic 175, a cheap old Clark 125 (everybody said it was a POS and I wasted my money buying it) that I have had for 10 years...and I have run maybe 40 pounds of wire thru it with no problems. (remembering to use the right tool for the job...it is only good for light work)...I had an old Hobart water cooled TIG that I could range from 5 amps to 300 amps...that thing would weld up the crack of dawn...I welded who knows how much Chromo with it when I was dragracing....Mother nature took it out with a single lightning bolt. I haven't had the justification to spend the large money needed to replace it.

My trusty "Old Blue" Mig sees most of the action. (I fab racks and such for shop projects in my spare time.)

I found a Lincoln Precision TIG 225 for $1666 without a cart. Pretty good price. I really should buy it but I'm working on getting my tube bender and a couple sets of dies. My plan is to start making some small offroad, two-seater vehicles using Buell motors out of wrecked bikes. About the size of a Polaris Razor but lower and longer to keep the center of gravity. Sort of a mini sandrail type vehicle.
