Looking for some help here. While on the MD group ride last Sat., I had my 05 Firebolt 12r not start twice when I thumbed the start button. Both times, I noticed that there was no green neutral light lit on the instrument cluster. Played around with it and repeatedly put in gear and back in neutral. No light and no starter engagement. Once I got a green light, bike started fine. Neutral safety switch or something else? Thanks for replies!

Yes, the neutral light or the clutch switch provides the ground for the start relay. This prevents you from engaging the starter while in gear unless the clutch is pulled in.
The diode in the fuse block acts as a an electrical one-way valve and allows the relay to get a ground when the clutch is pulled in but prevents the neutral light from being activated by the clutch switch.
The neutral switch is located right near the upper, leading edge of the front pulley. The connector for this switch is a push-on arrangement so it could be the connection or it could be the switch itself.

Thanks for the info, Rays. I will take the neutral switch apart and check connections first and then probably replace the switch.

I have been riding my bike Like this for a few months now I keep thinking I would suck If I stalled at a light or something but so far I have not had that issue. One of these days I am going to get a new clutch switch and a Speedo sensor since those two have been out since I bought the bike.

I have the same issue guys, I need to change my N switch as well. My N light never comes on but can still start the bike in N as long as I pull in the clutch and kickstand is up. Even if bike is in Neutral (w/ no light) and I leave the clutch out it will not start. Might be the same case for you guys and put your mind at rest for the stoplight stall start problem. Just pull the clutch even though its in Neutral.

My 07 xbs wont start sometime till I jiggle the key switch then neut. light comes on and it will start. After start up turn the bars and some time it will die, jiggle key and it comes alive. Worse after riding in rain. Harley shop wants me to leave it so they can check it out. After the lack of mechanical skills they have shown me I don't think so. I'll get to it sooner are later. Anybody else had this with the key switch?

Dc29 - I have had trouble with my key switch on my Uly - the electrical part of the key switch is common across several models (and can be purchased separately) - there are instructions for testing it on this link:

If you are willing to disassemble fiddly things then the electrical contacts can be pulled apart and cleaned.

Ray, Thanks for the info. I'm not afraid to take any thing apart and put it back together. I'll do as you did and use dielectric grease. On the bad web its hard to have a problem someone hasn't encountered. And thats what its all about.
