I recently wrapped the exhaust of my 09 12xt with thermotec's 2000 degree black header wrap after doing a good bit of research. However, after less than a week or so of installing the wrap, I've already noticed the black coloration is "burning" out of some of the hottest parts of the wrap.. namely close to the heads, where the wrap is turning a grayish white. Also, i wrapped the header with it on the bike, so i wasnt able to completely wrap the aft pipe all the way up into the frame to the head. So, these are my questions:

I know wrap coatings are available, but will 1200 degree BBQ paint be fine over my header wrap? Or do I absolutely need the 2000 degree stuff thermotec and others sell? Also, will not completely wrapping the top of the exhaust by the head put me at any risk of cracking the pipe due to inconsistency of heat distribution?

On another topic... I live in an area where riding season temps can frequently top 100 degrees. I know the Uly has the fan (i also got the updated fan programming), but I'm not completely at ease relying on it. Does anyone know of an aftermarket head temp gauge that can be wired up so I can keep an eye on it? I assume the Uly already detects head temps, because I understand thats how it regulates fan operation.

Any input is greatly appreciated... and I didn't post this thread in the wrong place, did I? (still new to BadWeB)
Thanks!

I have used bbq paint on header wrap in the past.It works good.Use lots of light coats. It will extend the life of the wrap.

I returned the BBQ paint today and went ahead and bought some rustoleum high heat flat black thats good to 2000 degrees. gonna shoot it tonight after the outside temp (104!!) drops enough for a good application. Will use foil, sheets of plastic, masking tape, and lots of light coats... i plan on covering the entire bike except for the header. Still hoping someone can give me some info about risking an exhaust crack from the heat or rigging up a head temp gauge. With the high temps around here i'm a bit worried about overheating the motor, especially with that rear cylinder tucked neatly in the back of the frame.

I'll try and post a pic when wrap is done. Any more input is greatly appreciated. i've found BadWeB incredibly useful thus far. Thanks!

It wont crack your headers, i have mine wrapped and did them while still on the motor and got good coverage all over. I also have right side scoop which helps heaps by pushing the hot air out the back. My fan only comes on after a big hard ride, half the time it did before.

How much is the right side scoop? i dont want to shell out the dough for the entire rider comfort kit, since i already wrapped my headers and i have updated fan programming, but the scoop alone i would like to have. where can i buy it by itself?

The RSS mill make a huge diff so dont puss out from buying one if your intention was to address the heat issues by wraping then a RSS would be the next logical step.

Yea...you should have seen this argument a year or two ago...!

All the "experts" would say, "if the right side scoop was needed the Buell engineers would have done it back then".

Well..I took a chance on the cost of a right side scoop from American Sport Bike about a year and a half ago.
Lotsa money...but what a huge difference.

Yes...well worth the expense.

I hope this info is correct you will have to check to be sure. But you can buy a RSS from the harley dealer... You get the inner scoop and the larger outside scoop (part numbers 1M0851.7aa when I checked it was 27.99 and part number 1M0852.7aa again when I checked it believe it was 22.99). This is the route I am going to go. Now it is important to know this i not an exact match to the LSS. Its an option out there for you.

I totally agree with this statement.I live in OKlahoma and it made a huge difference in comfort. My fan rarely comes on unless I am riding in stop and go traffic.I also wrapped my header
