I'm new to the whole Buell thing, I used to be a diehard gixxer rider but after I test rode an XB12R, I fell in love. So, I bought a used 2008 XB12STT with an open airbox, de-snorkeled, self-modded exhaust, and titanium wrapped headers with an ass end from a Firebolt and bars from a Firebolt for a whole 5K, BUT...the dude who had it before me put 5600 miles on it without getting it serviced. Not once. What can I expect to be wrong with it? It likes to cough more than a smoker and has a metallic clinking sound which I thought could be bent pushrods. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

These engines are hard to kill, you could probably get away with no oil for 5600 miles. I would change the fluids first and continue from there.

It's probably a good bet that he never reset the TPS. Run a search. You can do your own TPS resets on the '08 and newer bikes.

Also, these motors make a lot of noise naturally. I wouldn't be too concerned about it unless you find a lot of metal shavings on the engine oil drain plug. It's normal for the primary oil drain plug to have shavings on it.

The coughing could be due to the open airbox and exhaust. Try the TPS reset first, but these bikes are supposed to be constantly monitoring the TPS, so they technically shouldn't ever need a reset.

Change the oil and tranny fluid, and go ride!

I wouldn't worry about it.

Damn, this site really does live up to its reputation as being THE place to go for help considering I posted this not 2 hours ago. So far anyways. But just how would I go about resetting the TPS? Will I need anything special to do it? Thanks again.

Yep this is the place to go, we also have a nice reputation of being arrogant and Nazis and such because some people don't agree with some of the rules. : )

Anyway, do this for the TPS reset:

quote:

To reset an 08+ Buell, do the following:
1. Turn on the key.
2. Set the kill switch to the run position.
3. Don't start the engine. Rotate the throttle from fully closed (gently forced closed) to fully
open (gently held open), and then back again to closed (gently forced closed).
4. Repeat 3 times. Hold each position (fully open, fully closed) for 1 full second.
5. Turn the key off and on.

Someone mentioned you should reverse steps 1 and 2, but I do not know for sure the accuracy of that.

I'll try that, will anything flash on the indicator panel when its reset? Like the check engine light would flash on then off etc... I've checked the oil and it has plenty, it's as black as crude oil and smells like gas but it has oil. Why is it Buell exhausts pop so much? When I was riding it home I kicked it in a lower gear to slow down at a red light and this car had their windows down and as soon as I start letting off the clutch, POP POP POP times 10, and I get flipped off. On my gsx-1000 I run her a bit rich and if I stay in the 8 to 10,000 rpm range for a bit then snap off the throttle its literally like a cannon going off, not a pop pop but a BOOM!

You won't get any indicator as far as I know. The bike is popping because it isn't tuned to match your hacked up exhaust. The bikes pop a little stock, but its hard to notice and is more of a pfff sound.

I don't know what was done with the exhaust, but I would get it tuned, especially with the intake modifications too.

Oh, and post some pics. Do you know if the previous owner posted here? It might help us figure out whats up with the bike : )

You're running lean. You have an open intake and exhaust, but no adjustments to your fueling.

It's going to pop a lot.

You're fix for this is to adjust the ECM. That's out of my knowledge base.

Now go change your oil!

EDIT: Sorry for the repetition, Froggy and I posted at the same time.
(ok, almost the same time. He won this round)

If I'm right I dont think you can tune a factory race ECM, again I'm new to this so I have no clue. I have a diagnostics handpiece I use for my gixxer that I can use to adjust the injectors, do they make these for Buells? What about turbos or superchargers? I'm saddened at how they wheelie easy on the street but on the interstate it kind of lags whereas before I could wheelie on the interstate without a prob, its not educated but one hell of a rush! : D

1, you do not have a race ECM. The race ECM for your bike is only available to those with a race license and $700.

2, For tuning, you can get the Directlink software from American Sport Bike and use that to tune your bike.

3, A few one off Buell's have been done with a turbo/supercharger. There isn't any bolt on kits available.

4, The powerband is different on the XB than your Gixxer, so it takes a different skill set to wheelie on the freeway. It can be done in 3rd gear with a lot of practice.

5, Why the hell haven't you changed the oil yet? ; )

HA! Yeah, change my oil in the dead of morning...First for everything I guess, one reason, no new filter. And what bonehead changes oil without changing the filter? 3rd gear on the freeway going 75?! I'm used to doing wheelies at 80-90 in 3rd on my Gixxer but 3rd gear on the freeway on a XB12? I know a six speed rice grinding tranny is WAYYYY different than 5 gears. If you wont feel guilty if you see a guy dead on the news for stunting down the freeway, then how can this "3rd gear" wheelie be done? EDIT: Would it be mucho illegal for a real race ecm to be sold "under the table"?

The Buell race ecm is pretty much unobtanium at this point. Not that it matters, it was the exact same as the stocker, you are just paying for the race sticker and the programming software : )

Get the hang of doing wheelies in 2nd gear so you can figure out the power curve, then when you are ready for 3rd, "bounce" the front end by chopping on and off the throttle to load up the suspension, and when its springing back up, clutch her up : )

Oh, and I can't be held responsible for your stupidity : D

Dont worry, I wont paint on the back of my jacket "blame this on the BadWeb-er Froggy". It would only obscure my "Leftover Crack" message with an arrow pointing down. But the suspension is uber whacky, this could be from the ZTL2 brakes but I feel like the forks going to bottom out when I brake, the monoshock seems just about right though, will I need to adjust the comp/preload settings to do stuff going that fast?

If you haven't yet, break out your owners manual and readjust the suspension for your weight. Huge difference overall in the way the bike rides, and it takes only 5 minutes to do.
