Soy milk. I've really been trying to knock down the cholestoral and drop about 15 pounds so I figured this is one way to do it. Soy is a little on the sweet side, but on cereal its great. Soy chocolate milk ain't bad either.

Lot's of uses for soy.

Doc sez: "Lose 10"
He suggested South Beach Diet. A month later: minus 12 pounds. 2 inches off the waist.... I can now fit into those expensive Furygan leathers that I got 8 years ago.

What is the "South Beach Diet"? And by the way, my Vansons fit better these days too. And that alone is worth it.

I know soy burgers and other Soy "meat" products have a TON of sodium in them, how about the milk?

Careful, soy is *full* of estrogen. Its ok here and there, but as a male I would not make it a staple of my diet.

You can find whey protein in big tubs at WalMart (Body Fortress) for a good price.

I am on the classic Atkins diet now. Second time in my life I have gone on it seriously. 20 pounds down in 3 months and counting... just like the first time I did it. I feel better and need less sleep as well.

If you're not already doing it, try to work in some sort of physical exertion into your daily routine as well. A diet is a tricky bastard in that many see it as a temporary thing, and without an actual lifestyle change will balloon up when going off the diet - been there, done that.

While the set point theory has been in and out of favor over the years, it is at least agreed that some exercise will 1) help you loose weight and 2) help keep it off

http://web.mit.edu/medical/pdf/set_point_theory.pd f

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0675/is_5_2 0/ai_92840206

Good news for those who can't take out an hour a day for exercising: new research suggests that it is almost as beneficial to split a half hour brisk walk into 2 15 minute segments.

I know for me, that change in eating habits (realizing I'm stress-eating for one) and up-prioritizing working out made a huge difference in cholesterol, body fat, energy etc.

I work pretty hard, (when I'm not sitting here at the computer). Cutting timber with a power saw I break a moderate sweat and keep it for 5-6 hours/day.

I'm a little overweight, ten lbs. or so, but I think that's a good thing at my age, (59).

My diet consists of fresh self grown garden veggies, wild game, and fish. I feel pretty good. Had an excellent Stress EKG test recently for my FIM license, and passed in the top 3% for my age group.

The Dr. told me to keep doing whatever it was that I was doing because my health was excellent. I didn't tell him about all the bad habits....

Did you know that when you donate blood platelets, they weigh you before every donation?

Apparently, having a stranger know what I weigh every two weeks was the motivation I needed to get the crank put back on my bicycle. Was down two pounds between donation 1 and 2. 3 is coming up later this week, we'll see if I've continued the trend. If so, only 6 more donations to my target weight!

Here is a fun thing that *really* worked for me:

Get a group together, and have each person put in $100 cold hard cash at the start. They then weigh in.

Three months later, each person had to have lost 7.5% of their body weight. If you are below that, you split the pot. Above that, and you loose your $100. Above where you started, and you pitch another $100 to the pot.

Check out the graph at:
http://basement.kilgallons.com/weight/signon.php

Thats a simple little PHP web app I threw together. I, of course, am dufflepud. Seeing it plotted like this (really easy to add and edit weight data) is really revealing. I can look at that plot and point to both vacations I have taken since it started, and to the day I had a stomach flu.

It makes it a lot more fun tracking it as a group, and the $100 entry fee puts my greed against my gluttony. I'll let them duke it out... so far greed is winning : )

There are some flaws in that app, if you want to attack it I can give you some hints : ) But it would be fairly easy to modify and port if somebody else wants to use it, I'll be happy to release the code open source (perl artistic license).

I could even host it for somebody if they want to try it...

Ahhhh, Paul. You don't even register in this demographic - you're *way* too healthy : )

I go to work, sit on my ass for 8 hours and go home and do more sitting - well, at least I did.

Fortunately, in NYC, the public transportation is a much more pleasant option than driving, so I walk 15 minutes to the Subway, and another 10 minutes from the Subway to work, and the repeat in the opposite direction going home. But even that wasn't enough for my intake ... so a bit over a year ago I joined a gym and now try to get a workout in 5 times a week.

Funny you mention the greed thing Reep. I started working out in conjunction with a bet. Of course one of the other betters apparently was pregnant, so we decided to postpone picking the winner until after she'd delivered - just didn't seem fair ; )

At this point I could still stand to loose a few (or 10), but I dropped 23 lbs, and in the process converted a bit of the remaining weight from "built-in insulation" to muscle. Great feeling. If I could lay off the booze and the chocolate (fat chance - pun intended) I'd be in good shape (another pun - intended).

Danny; I like the weigh-in story. While I was really gaining weight I did my best to cover it up with choice of clothing, so I can see how public weighing would be an inspiration.

Henrik

My health complaint is my chassis is wearing out, bad. I creak and squeak when I move, and there's damn little spring left in my step. More like, thud, thud, thud, when I walk.

My spine is a mess from a lifetime of abuse. I need new bushings.

Yeah, the chassis. Some parts can be be replaced. Others ... the OEM parts are best, even if a bit worn.

I don't think anybody else in this thread associated talking about health, soy or farting with being gay or effeminant like you did.

Anyway, if you could start a nail polish thread somewhere, I'm sure it won't be long before someone drops in...not anybody from this thread, mind you.

Fredericksburg is always nice and has ONE MILLION Bed and Breakfasts to choose from as well as good restaurants and lots of shopportunities for the ladies (and the Admiral Nimitz Museum for the guys). Luckenbach is just up the road 'bout 5 miles as well, if you wanna hang out with Willie, Waylon and The Boys (O.K., maybe not Waylon anymore...). Hunt is pretty nice, too and you can visit Stonehenge II and Easter Island while you're there:

Y'all have fun and don't forget about the Harvest Classic in October:

Thanks RT and Jay.

After spending a couple three nights in San Antonio, we're booked at the Becker Vineyard B&B for a couple nights. Gonna check out some local wineries, Enchanted Rock, Wildseed Farms, possibly a cooking school in Fredericksburg, and of course Oktoberfest. : D Blake like Polka music and beer, and Michele is full blood Czech heritage, so we should enjoy Friday evening in Fredericksburg.

I've been riding down there a few times, but I cannot recall the location of a scenic overlook right off the road where you look at least a couple three hundered feet or so down upon the river and a camp below. Anyone know where that is? I seem to recall it is a bit north of Leakey and Vanderpool, but am not sure. Here's a wide angle pic from the overlook...

Near Leakey, TX?
