So, I took a bit of a spill about 7 years ago and I haven't started it since. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I think I can figure out the basics...I'd like to see if I can get it running again on my own before taking it in somewhere for service. Can someone recommend all the necessary steps I should take before I attempt to start the bike again? I know I need to: 1) get a new battery (any particular recommendations on a replacement?) 2) drain old gas 3) an oil and filter change (I see St Paul Harley has oem replacement) Is there anything I should do with the carbs? How about any of the other fluids? Anything else? Or, if anyone can recommend a solid mechanic in the Salem, OR area, that too would greatly be appreciated. Thanks! } | ||

1.) Stock from HD, never had a problem with HD batteries. 2.) for sure 3.) They are a good source of oil filters. Don't forget the oil filter o-ring in case it isn't part of the oil filter kit. You'll need the copper and aluminum crush washers too for both drain holes. Torque to correct values. 4.) TPS reset is a must. Key on, kill switch on, NO START 3 sets of twist to WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (WOT) and gently let throttle return to fully closed position. KEY OFF for a couple of seconds, then start the bike. Let it come up to full warm up ~ 172 degrees F. Take it out for at least a good 30 minutes and vary speed constantly with a couple of WOT for a couple of seconds. Get it out on a 55 or higher speed limit road to teach the ECM in the higher RPM range. If St. Paul HD/Buell has a factory service manual, electrical diagnostics manual, and a parts catalog, pick those up. Good info in them. If you have reached the first major service interval (12,600 miles), Bill Kane in Hastings, MN is a really good Buell mechanic. That should get you where you want to initially be.
