So a CKP sensor error has appeared on my 1125 & thought I’d test it, figuring it is just a magnetic reed switch but not sure? I put my meter on it & put the sensor on & off the crankshaft but only got an open limit or infinite resistance reading… is it dead, or do they require voltage to operate?

What is a CKP sensor? Perhaps you mean Crank Position Sensor? If so, it is a hall effect sensor. It works in conjunction with a chip in the ECU that drives it. There are many variations of these sensors. Some track the position of a magnet and others track a shift in a magnetic field that the sensor creates when a conductor moves through the field absorbing some of the field driving an increase in current from the drive transistor, which is detected by the chip. Several things can effect these sensors like change in circuit resistance (corrosion), mechanical failure (broken conductor), physical position to the moving field interrupter and even temperature. For more in depth information, Google is your friend. These cannot be reliably tested with OHM meter or with an "O" scope because the signal is so small. if you suspect it to be faulty, just change it.

Wombat is actually correct, it is usually referred to as a CKP as CPS has several other meanings but both are used. Wombat did get it wrong in the title though.
I would check the wiring to it for any damage and if none found just replace it, had one fail on my Sportster.

Thanks Steve, you’re right google is handy. After a bit more reading in the electrical diagnostic manual it’s actually a variable reluctance sensor which should show some sort of resistance reading due to its coil, so I think it is rooted. Watched a good video of a technician testing one with a multimeter & oscilloscope just for basic is it working test.
Yes I had a dislexic moment in the title, lol!
