G’day Buellers, wondering if anyone has any feedback on the Hildstrom rotor cooling method…has it worked? I’m in the process of installing a Rick’s hot shot stator & r/r to my ‘09 1125R which still has the original un-modified rotor in it, which has lost most of the resin sealant around the rim! Should I bite the bullet & buy a new one from Buell, or can I use a silicon sealant to replace the resin & do the cooling mods?
Ps, I know this question should be in the charging/electrical thread but keen for some feedback.

In answer to your query, yes it will help cool the stator, but it is not for free. I'm not at all sure that the volume consumed in that cooling is affordable in the oil pump's volume budget. I have not investigated it and I would not do it if it compromises the engine. It makes much more sense to swap out the factory shunt regulator to a series regulator and reduce the generated heat through improving efficiency. If you do not understand the function of both reg types, study that and make that change first.

I too had the resin missing on mine, repaired it with JB weld, still working years later.

Thanks Steve, I’m familiar with shunt & series wired reg/ref’s and am fitting a new series unit as well as a new higher temp rated stator as previously mentioned. I was actually interested in peoples long term results that have done the rotor mods. The factory upgrade is actually a small hole that injects or squirts oil onto the stator so I don’t think there would be a concern regarding the oil pump’s capacity. Mr Hildstrom’s mod is more about air flow than oil.

This is just a bit off topic, but I wonder why the cam bearing castings were not drilled for oil spray nozzles when the castings were designed to accommodate them. Especially if the oil pump was up to the volume required, hence my hesitation to use the rotor cooling mod.

Not sure why the hildstrom mod would affect oil pressure, as the hole size for the oil jet is not messed with. Oil pressure is not maintained by the rotor to stator interface.
