Yes, we are probably talking about something that doesn't make a difference either way. This bike is faster than my riding skills, so I probably won't be making any mods to the breather tube. But the breather tube does contaminate the intake charge and intake tract to a certain extent.

I don't mean to add fuel to any fire, but the sponge, in the end of the rectangular breather-hose, is dry. (I've double checked this, now) One side is a bit miss-colored, but it's dry. I'm pretty conscientious about not overfilling the engine with oil.
As I cleaned off the boots and airbox inside, my rag was discolored like K&N filter-oil.
I do not mean to imply this is the only reason for carbon build up, but maybe a mitigating factor.

What about leaky valve stem seals? That could be a source of the oil as well. I am no expert, just throwing it out there for discussion.

Also, I have been doing some research and it looks like when carbon is built up like that it has a tendency to come off in chunks. SO if you put some Seafoam (or Berryman's B12 which has the reputation as being the most aggressive fuel cleaner additive) you might run the risk of carbon chunks falling into the cylinder. I am not sure how much of a risk this is...again let's discuss.

What do you all think about an inline baffles catch can? Maybe this is a good compromise, although it would take a bit of ingenuity to find a good place to install it. I wonder how much vacuum it takes to pull the fumes thru the can? Check it out.

Thanks for that link, Harlan. I’m running my case vents to atmosphere, but I might try one of those.

IMHO, the most common causes of the buildup shown above are bad intake valve seals (Harley’s seals suck but they are short enough to fit where better seals won’t) worn piston rings and/or cylinder walls.

Oil can and does travel from one cylinder to the other during normal operation, so either one or both cylinders could be causing it.

If I repeated something said above, I apologize. I got tired of reading the thread.

Harlan, I bought a couple of those catch cans.
The amount of flow restriction they might add would not be measurable unless the flow rate was extremely high, well beyond what an 1125 puts out.

The simple way of keeping things clean...
The ports, the valves and the piston tops, use a fuel injector cleaner.
I do this for three tank fulls, every oil change.
I've done this in most ALL of my past and current bikes.

Does it work...how's nice clean port runners, valve head backside and with a borescope to view the piston tops, just over 100,000 miles on my highest mileage Yamaha R1..!
My 1125CR, RX and my 12s all get the same treatment, all are nice and clean inside.

Redline is very good, Lucas is also good.

John, did you find a mounting point for the catch can? Or have you gotten to that point yet?

As far as fuel system cleaners, Berryman's B12 seems to be the best...even better than Seafoam. I am not convinced Lucas products are any good. Amsoil did a pretty comprehensive test on motor oils and Lucas did not perform well. I have avoided Lucas products since then.

Don't give a crap about someones else's so called tests.

All I care about is that the ports, valves and piston tops in my bikes...are...CLEAN..! Yes...with the lowly Lucas cleaner.

Funny...I've actually seen them first hand..!

Anyone's welcome to come by and witness during the next valve adjustment on the CR or the RX.

Tried Seafoam, Lucas is better. Never tried Berrymans.

Harlan, I haven’t gotten around to mounting one of the catch cans yet. Between the storm and working on the X1W I recently bought, I haven’t had time for much else.

I imagine I’ll bend a bracket out of stainless sheet to fasten to the underside of the tail section, then hang the can on that, unless some better idea jumps out at me.
