Here is some basics.
i Coulomb (unit of charge) is = to 1.6 x 10 raised to the 19 power or a bunch.
1 Coulomb passing a single point in one second = i Ampere
Power in watts = voltage x current (amperes)
i HP = 745.7 watts
A 32 ampere motorcycle alternator is about 85% efficient. So, 15 volts x 32 amperes x 1.15 = 517 watts max power or .7 HP (power draw from the crankshaft.

So if your motor cycle load is only 250 watts you only need .33 HP. That leaves an extra .37 HP to drive the rear tire......if you want it or saves the fuel equivalent if you don't and (this is the kicker) it saves 260 watts of heat because of the second law of thermodynamics that states all generated energy not consumed results in heat. That heat, not sufficiently dissipated (cooled), will overheat the stator coils and kill them. So, to summarize, a series regulator that literally opens up the stator coil circuits when not needed is better than the shunt regulator that dumps the excess power to ground.

Hey! I'm impressed! If your figures are right, I was way close with my rough assumptions. Woohoo!

You have a great point about heat, the hotter a charging system gets, the less efficient it is, so a series VR will save even more heat by being more efficient and saving more heat so it can be more efficient, saving more... uh ya...

And even though the HP number is still crazy small, we're talking BHP at the crank not RWHP: ) Repeatable dyno tests are within 2-3 RWHP (5-7BHP) so using Stevel's numbers, the HP you are saving with the VR change is still approximately 10 times smaller than you could even test on a standard dyno.

I like the discussion on theory though, fun times for a dork like me.

I'd be better off losing 10 pounds for about a 1.5 HP gain. I guess that would be RWHP to boot!

Soooo got the stator in the mail today. Looks like crap honestly. Is it normal to see a but of epoxy flaking off already? In addition it looks like half the magnets on the post are good (shiny metal) the other half are covered with the green material beneath it? I tried to upload pictures but its saying to shrink pics and idk how to do all that.

Yes but my crackingseems to be a bit worse. And the metal ends like i said half are metal and half are covered by theat green computer chip material like they have underneath them.

Additionally, mine has no red wires coming off of it. Only black.

I’ll take a pic of it but im still not sure how to “shrink” pictures. Still have to order the rotor. Hope to have it done by the end of the month.

Use your Snipping Tool app (windows utility) to "snip" anything on your screen. Save it. Upload it. Works awesome.

Hook it up and run it, if voltage isn't right swap two legs. You can't mess anything up.

Wound up being a ground funny enough. Of course i didn’t look at the simplest answer first haha BUT BETTER NEWS

Ricks stator burned up in less than 10 miles. Thing is putting out absolutely no juice now and bike runs like shit and dies randomly. Taking offers on it as we speak for parts. Can’t take it anymore.

The Rick's stator are coming from overseas with no quality control for sure.

Seems like there was a different issue the whole time.

What was the charging voltage after you finished the job?
