I prefer the ones that filter oil.

Crazy question - did they change anything with oil filers between 08 to 09/10?

I am about to order K&N from amazon, but it states 09 and 10 only.
Just double checking

All 1125s and 1190s use the same oil filter. I personally run the OEM Buell filter just because that is the easiest one for me to get, even on my EBR.

FYI, even though an oil filter cross reference physically fits does NOT mean its right.

I'll stick with Lance at SPHDonline.com

I see $18/qt of the best synthetic oil in a bike all the time, but the cheapest eBay filter is on the same bike. Us humans are funny.

Didnt think that a K&N would be considered to be a 'cheap' filter

Closest dealer who will order a buell part is 40 minutes or so away.
OR I can order K&N off Amazon and get it delivered to my door. Its 6 bucks (as an add-on item).

Recommended to avoid any of the oil filters that have the "nut" on the end. There have been many reports of them failing.
Most race orgs are banning them.

High flow filters work fine. Order a quantity to your door in order to save some coin and don't worry about it. I have one Buell filter left, so I can compare to a High Flow filter. As far as I can tell, they are identical.

Some oil filters have a faux "nut" stamped into the end of the can to facilitate removal. If you can't get a conventional oil filter wrench in place you can get a 3/8" ratchet with a socket. I'll see if I can locate a phot . . . .

Court doesn't own an 1125 so we'll give him a pass here. The 1125 uses a filter cartridge, not a spin-on canister type. I'm not familiar with 99buellx1 but given the name I presume the same - familiarity with air cooled motors.

I use one of those on my Sportster, never had a problem, how are they failing, filtration or physically?

I suspect physical, since you'd be "torquing" it from the center of a thin shell, as opposed to the edges where the sealing O-ring is...

perhaps the problem is over-torquing the filter with the mechanical advantage of a ratchet? Over-torquing might compromise the seating of the rubber seal leading to leakage. Just a guess.

I am guessing you are right. In the instructions it says the nut is for lock wiring the filter and removal only, you install by hand only, no spanner or sockets should be used, if people are using that nut to install that would be the problem right there, bit unfair to blame the product for users not following the instructions.

Agreed, you dont torque down those oil filters on the evo motors.

I have always gone with hand tighten plus 1/4 turn...sometimes doesn't seem like enough but I have never had an issue with any of my cars or bikes.

Also, I've read that the filter doesn't need replacing very often at all. This is very counterintuitive to my thinking, but that's what the service manual says regarding change intervals, right?

I think its foolish not to change the filter with the oil...at least for people like me who only change the oil once a year.

Several of the big trucking companies change the filter and have the oil analyzed. More important to change the filter.

Drained the oil from the bike tonight...yep, spilled a little on the clutch side. Dangit.

Had a filter from EBR I forgot about.
But I dont have a torx head bit to get the oil filter out.

But I dont remember which oil I should pick up for this?

I used to run the Amsoil 20W/50 for Vtwins, but it's a pain in the ass to get. I run Mobil 1 V-twin now. Its available at the local auto parts store.
