I installed a Mosfet voltage regulator from RM stator on my CR as I've heard they're better than the stock. I had no issues with the original. After installing the new Mosfet, idle voltage is around 14.6 and voltage at 4k rpm is 15 to 15.3 with the cluster flashing system error and tach dropping to zero. I tested the Mosfet and it didn't test as defective so I'm kind of at a loss. Any ideas or should I just put the original back in?

Well i removed the Mosfet and put the original back in and everything is back to normal. If anything it's a little low but already have the EBR rotor and upgrades are on the way. Whatever the issue, it was caused by the new regulator

"Just cause it's NEW and still in the box doesn't mean it is not defective"...said to me so many years ago by a salty ET sailor.

I tested it and according to the website, it's not defective but I'm sending it back anyways

Jack at roadstercycle sells the SH847 with various wiring options and tests each VR before shipping. Apparently, he has received some VRs that were faulty right out of the box. He writes the voltage achieved on the back of the VR. Hard to top that attention to detail. Good instructions and quality parts as well.

I'm not affiliated with roadstercycle in any way, just a satisfied customer who appreciates the attention to detail and doesn't really enjoy refixing things and hassles with warranties from manufacturers.

For what it's worth, I believe Jack now offers only the SH847 for Buells due to problems with other VR replacement options.

Check his website for details.

I've got the same issue with a RR from Rick's. It's the same technology as the RM Stator unit.

These boards are starting to confuse me. So what all needs to be replaced? The rotor, the stator... and the voltage regulator?

If you replace the rotor and voltage regulator to a series regulator before the stator gets fried then you should only have to replace those 2. If you have a lot of miles or are already having problems then you should replace all 3

My stator is toast. So I'm currently scavenging for parts to do the whole thing. But I'm confused by all the board's talk: use the hdfix, don't use the hdfix, bypass the VR, upgrade the VR... does the VR come on the new stator?

Honestly I didn't even know what to do for the HD fix so I didn't do anything for that. What I did do was replace the rotor with the EBR one and changed the voltage regulator to the Sh847 from roadstercycle. My stator was still fine and I only changed all that to prevent issues. In your case you would do the same but also would have to change the stator. The voltage regulator is not included with the stator and its best not to use the stock style anyways

This conversation should be in the Charging System sub-forum. Wes, it sounds like you need to familiarize yourself with the component parts of the charging system - stator, rotor, voltage regulator - all separate components . The harley fix disables one phase of the 3 phase stator, providing less voltage, particularly at low speed, than the electrical system requires; battery will not be fully charged, bike may cut out and be hard to start, error lights/codes on the cluster. If you have upgraded the charging system you do not need the fix and it should be removed

Actually when you open one lead in a 3 phase delta system you lose two phases.
