They are not normal bearings. They are flanged with a neck on the top.

Neither HD nor EBR made these bearings. They were made by a bearing manufacturer. Usually, there will be a number stamped on the bearing. In both cases, take the information you have and the bearing and bring it to a bearing house. There they will try to find a replacement either through the number research, as they have all the reference books or by size. In any case that usually works well.

Many have tried to source replacements other than from EBR or HD, all have failed including me, my very best wishes for your success and please let us know if you do succeed. On the plus side they can be dismantled so if you can get replacement ball bearings and the surfaces are not damaged you can rebuild them.

NICE 38 is stamped on the bearing... both sides

Also 17 on one side, and 40 on the other

Nice job Vagelis! With this info replacements can be found outside of both HD and EBR.

Well done and thank you Vagelis, the OD of our bearings is 1.925" but this is clearly a possible source of replacements.

I have just sent a "INQUIRY" to RBC bearings that distribute NICE bearings.... It was this :

I own a BUELL 1125
motorcycle, that uses 2 NICE
steering head bearings,
flange radial type. The
bearings on the motorcycle
have stamped "NICE 38 17"
on one side of the plastic
seal and "NICE 38 40" on
the other side of the
plastic seal. The bearing is
very similar to the NICE
5418, but the BORE and O.D.
are slightly different.

Spare parts for Buell
motorcycles are distributed
through the Harley-Davidson
network. But they will be
discontinued in a few
months. Since about 10.000
Buell 1125 motorcycles were
sold, there will be soon a
demand for these bearings.

Are you aware of this
situation? Will you consider
keep manufacturing them and
have them available for sale
from the RBC network ?

I could send you pictures of
these particular NICE
bearings as sold by the
Harley_Davidson dealers,
since I have a spare set.

Best Regards

Vagelis Fragos

I hope that my English was OK....and I really hope we get a positive reply soon....

Your English is fine.

Let us know if there is anything we can be doing in the USA to be of help.

This would be wonderful if we could insure an ongoing supply.

Thanks for your efforts.

I went through this before. They are NICE/SKF bearings. The SKF guys I took mine too couldn't find anything close with the flange. Ended up forking out the bucks to get some from HD
