Odd question that popped into my head today - does the bike need the instrument cluster installed to crank?

Nope, assuming the security mode wasn't engaged when the cluster was removed.

Nope! I rode mine for about 6 weeks,(and hit the rev limiter many times) before I could afford a new IC. I also, duct taped a head light to the faring frame, and connected it to the auxiliary wire connector. The only issue was the directional did not work. They need the IC.

If you have a lock but no key ,remove it from the back side and use a small screw driver for turning the ignition.
