... with 18.4 mi. showing on the "fuel" display. Fortunately, I was able to coast up to a pump. I was very lucky. It took 5.2 gal. to fill (right up to the bottom of the filler "neck"). I was hammering on it so this is likely a worst case scenario.

In the past I have gotten 25 mi. after the low fuel light came on, but to do so I drove very conservatively and it took 5.1 gal. to fill.

I'll not be so cavalier in the future. :-) I've adjusted my self imposed limit to 15 mi. on "reserve".

I often wondered what the approximate range was. Helpful information!

My fuel light is totally messed up to the point I don't even use it anymore. It's worse in the cold weather. Someone will chime in as to the reason as it's a known issue. I believe you have to pull the fuel pump to fix it.

Your fuel light could be slowly malfunctioning, which might explain the difference.

I have run out of gas several times and the most I can put in there is 4.6ish gallons.

Anyhow, I use my tripmeter now. when I hit 120 miles on a tank I am getting nervous and looking for gas.

The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel

When running very low, the pump will heat much more than normal. This isn't good on the pump

When you run out, you can damage O2 sensors

I try to ride 0 miles on the "reserve"

The one and only time I ran out of gas, I went 26 miles with the light on.

Started getting Code b1005 LOWFUEL SYS ERR with fuel & engine light on about 41,000 miles later when bike started in cold ambient temps (like <50F). Dealer replaced fuel pump about 2,000 miles after that to try to fix, but it didn't help. I just ignored it since the code and engine/fuel light go away after bike warms up and don't seem to cause any real trouble.

I thought the "thermistor" in the fuel pump that sends the low fuel signal goes bad.

Someone will chime in.

buying a replacement might be a problem...seems that the XB model uses the same thermistor

Fresnobuell: It is, but since the thermistor is integrated into the fuel pump and soldering a ground wire onto the thermistor is required on the 1125 bikes due to it being held in place by a plastic rather than metal bracket, they replaced the whole assembly. I don't remember being charged for this even though the bike was technically out of warranty. Still didn't fix the light on at low ambient temp issue, likely due to the IC firmware as indicated in the thread referenced by Nuts4mc. I suspect that perhaps later IC firmware has conditional code to ignore the LFL until the bike is warmed up.

Thanks for that reference, Nuts4mc.
It's definitely something I can live with until the thermistor resistance actually goes out of spec.

IMHO, it's not a big deal. It's just as easy to zero the tripmeter at fill up.

Sure, I do that anyway... In my case the LFL does work properly by coming on when the bike is low on gas and going off once filled up. It just comes on (along with the engine light and code b1005 being logged) if started when the ambient temperature is quite cold. The light goes off once the bike warms up which only takes a minute or two.

Have gone 20+ miles with LFL on. Never tried for 30, pretty sure it wouldn't make it.

Regarding the LCL alert being temperature sensitive. What do you consider "low temp"?

Trip 1 gets reset every fill up, and I always fill it.

Looks like a moderately annoying but not that difficult soldering job. Hard enough that you need to do things right for it to work (high power iron, good surface prep, good flux and good solder), but if you do things right it should work every time.

You won't easily hurt that thermistor soldering to that housing unless you are trying to do it with a torch...

I haven't paid attention to the light in so long, I am trying to think about what mine actually does now.

It definitely comes on in the mornings, even in warm tempts. It just stays on longer on the cold mornings.

I think the last time I saw the LFL come on, I went about 2-3 miles before I was out. That was probably the last time I put any credence into paying attention to the light.

Thank god my riding buddy is quite McGuiver. I ran out of gas on that ride and he was able to use some drip tube we "borrowed" from some landscaping nearby and a soda can to siphon from his tank, into the can and then into my tank. It was pretty cool.

As mentioned above, I observed this condition starting when the ambient temperature dropped to around 50F give or take. Basically whenever the exhaust produces visible steam due to the air temperature being low. That said, I've ridden in temps as low as -22F commuting 35 miles each way.

Same here.

I have a new thermistor over at the shop that I bought for my '09 1125CR after running out of fuel with no warning light.
It hasn't been used because the pump bit it before I had a chance to pull it and change the thermistor.

I'll get the part number and post it in case anyone needs it. It's a $15 +- part, as compared to $250-320 fuel pump.

As luck would have it, the pump died on my '08 R...
If anyone has a good pump they don't need, let me know.

You can replace just the pump part of that assembly with an off the shelf auto parts store part.

I just posted some fuel pump part numbers to the cross reference post stickied at the top of the 1125R forum section.
