Those of you who have wired in battery monitors such as the Kuryakyn on the 1125R, have you used a dedicated lead to the starter relay, or tapped the auxiliary or lighting circuit up front?

Thanks,

DB

a) I used the headlights as they draw some current and have larger gauge wire to tap into
b) I have also used the heated grip circuit with a similar result, but note that circuit has a short delay before it sees voltage...it also is disconnected when you use the kill switch

bottom line... both gave me "equal" readings on my Kuryakyn unit...I wanted to know actual voltage so I have upgraded to this from Amazon connected to (b) works well:

Appreciate the response.

Btw, where did you mount the numerical readout unit to keep it out of the elements? Dudn't look like a waterproof thing.

with the downfall of Radio Shack..I have to search for electrical stuff on Amazon...here's a waterproof version for your Uly...(comes in 4 LED colors R,G,B,A) if you search for them)
https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Voltmeter-Detector-Automatic-Precision/dp/B00LKXGKBY/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1477181794&sr=8-4&keywords=SMAKN%C2%AE+2+Wires+0.28%22+Mini+Waterproof+Dc+Voltmeter+Led+Digital+Display+Voltmeter+Gauge+LED+Voltage+Detector+Automatic+Precision

If you're on a 1125r...Fab'd a bracket out of Plexiglas/Acrylic ( made an L bracket, heat from a HF heat gun) 2-56 screws and nuts (tiny stuff) some standoffs from some nylon tubing, Industrial grade double sticky tape and attached to the fairing stay...

I tapped the Accessory ckt, where the factory heated grips plug in.
Mounted it just aft of the IC back in mid 2008.

Appreciate the feedback. Nuts... cool setup.

Headlight is where I'll tap. I put one on my Uly but can't even remember where I pulled from. I DO remember avoiding the auxiliary circuit due to the ECM low- threshold cutoff

Have you guys seen the Sparkbright LED voltage monitors? I bought a couple of them, mounted one in the dash of my '76 shovelhead, which has an earlier style two light dash.

One light is the oil pressure warning light, the other is labeled generator.
I cut the generator side of the red lens off, and replaced it with clear Lexan. The LED itself fit perfectly into a Delrin bushing I had made for something else, but worked ideally for holding the LED in the dash.

Hmmm...that doesn't seem to be the address. I'll see if I can find it.

I'm looking to see if I have any pics of the installation on the '76.

BTW, I just bought an '83 FLHTC. 80" shovel motor, rubber mounted with a 5 speed tranny.

Much like the '85 I bought brand new...the only bike I ever bought new. (Still thinking about an 1190 though)

This isn't working...I'm going to try another post.

Aha! Finally...I hate photobucket.

This is wired directly to battery voltage, and would be on all the time, except I have a ground cutoff switch wired in to the battery cables. It's a 600 amp rated marine grade switch, installed because of the shovelhead's bad habit of the solenoid sticking closed. Turning the switch off is way easier than accessing and pulling a battery cable.

John,
This may have been successful in your case, but switching earth is a really, really bad idea. It is illegal in every national wiring code for very good reason. It is particularly dangerous for the good health of electronics.

Why would switching the ground side of the load be dangerous for a DC vehicle electronics application?

Stevel, it may very well be dangerous in an AC system that draws a lot of current, but I' m talking about an old Harley with an upgraded charging system, all the way to 32 amps, which is rectified to DC before hitting the rest of the circuit.

Thanks to Shovelhead.us, I know there are shovelheads running these all over the US, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, probably Germany, and I imagine more.

This switch is only used for shutdown in an emergency situation when the starting solenoid sticks closed.
Otherwise, everything is shut off before this switch (except for the voltage monitor LED which draws about 3 milliamperes when covered. This switch is first on, last off under normal conditions.
Old shovelheads aren't known for having much in the way of electronics...

"may have been successful in your case" ?

So how much worse for the system is this switch compared to having to disconnect a battery cable when the solenoid sticks, probably breaking the connection several times in the process of getting the fastener unscrewed and cable removed?

The only times I've had to use it for it's intended purpose thus far, the ignition wasn't even turned on.
