Hi everyone, I was looking for some help and opinions. I sold the bike but, I still have a factory lower fairing kit in the box. It has never been installed and is a complete set. How much is this worth? I am considering selling it. Thanks for your help.

That is a loaded question. Those fairings are like gold in these parts here....

I bought mine for 200 in mint condition with brackets. I see them go for 2-400.

I also see them go quickly. They are in demand.

Figor, what's a Zas fairing?

Can anyone tell me whether the factory lowers are ABS or composite?

Skizzy, if you haven't sold them yet, I am interested, depending on where you set the price.
Could you send some pics?

FWIW, I got the side fairing kit the other day, (absolutely as described) and there was a copy of the letter sent to the dealers informing them they would be getting at least one set as a promotional deal.

It describes the fairings as being made of ABS. They look and feel like it to me.

Just going from old memory Pansovevo, I have MSDS for Surlyn...
I'll try to backtrack and see when/where I got that info.

Here are 3 BadWeB posts that refer to Surlyn, all from highly respected Badwebbers.

I have no doubts that the R front fairing, the CR "windscreen", and the radiator pods are Surlyn, but the side fairings I have look like ABS to me.

I'll dig out the letter I mentioned above and snap a pic of it shortly.

I believe ABS is a bit more heat resistant and stiffer than Surlyn. Don't quote me on that, as I haven't verified it.

The possibility exists that they later changed to Surlyn for the side fairings as well.

The set I have appears to be one of the earliest sets shipped.

Photobucket's giving me fits today.

I really need to find a better photo hosting service. Photobucket wastes a great deal of my time some days.

Edited to add I know I rotated the pic before saving it...no idea why it's displaying sideways.

I'm not expert on any of this, possibly the ABS is a little more heat resistant than the Surlyn.
I know of other plastics that aren't Surlyn.

The plastic cover behind the rear primary seems to be a glas-filled nylon, IMO.

I'd have to agree with you that the fairings are ABS..

fun in the rabbit hole....

Picked up a spare set last week here in the UK and the included instructions contained a page detailing how to prepare surlyn for painting.

^^^ Are you referring to Table 1 on Page 3 of these instructions?

This is what I found when I did a search for Solarkote.

A more informative link.

http://www.solarkote.com/en/faqs/index.html

Near as I can tell, Solarkote is a thin layer of acrylic material that is applied to the substrate (in this case ABS) to make it more UV and scratch resistant.

If I understand correctly, it is applied to the raw material at the time of manufacture, similar to the way that 2024 Alclad aluminum sheet is coated with a thin layer of pure aluminum.

I could be wrong.

I could have sworn it said surlyn on my instructions but your link to the instructions otherwise looks the same and I cannot find my copy so it looks like I am wrong.
