After installing my new rear bearings and new Dunlop Q3’s front and back, I rode down to Burr Oak State Park in Ohio Dragon Country. If you don’t believe me pull up the map for Marietta, OH and take a look at Route 26…pure sportbike nirvana! My replacement bike is a 2008, and just like my original ’08, I have to charge it every few weeks even if I am riding it four or five times per week. These trips are almost always to and from work which is 20 miles one way and mostly highway travel at about 4,500 rpm. My bike had been sitting at least a week while I was working on it, and she was just about dead so I charged her the night before I left. She fired up and ran like a charm the whole way down, including two stops with short periods of being shut down. The next day she sat all day outside with a few periods of heavy rain and temps in the 70’s. The end of that day I tried to fire her up and she would not start. The next morning I jumped her and rode an hour before shutting her down for about three hours. This day was dry and a little warmer and she started right up. I find it odd that the rain and cooler temperatures discharged the battery so quickly the day after 150 miles of fairly high RPM riding. I have also noticed on a few occasions how a two minute jump start seems to really boost the charge of the battery...any good theories on this?

What kind of battery is it? How old is the battery?

Have you checked and cleaned all the grounds?

I've read here that some bikes have a parasitic drain, especially if you shut it down with the key instead of the kill switch. Don't know why.

Yes I am familiar with the parasitic drain issue and always shut down with the kill switch. The previous owner said that the battery was brand new but I haven't checked to confirm. It does seem to act just like my OEM battery acted in my original bike.

What type of battery is it?
Have you ever had it load tested?

Harbor Freight sells a 100 amp load tester that works reasonably well and the price is decent when on sale.
