Hi, looking for steering head bearings. Oem part #18171 from asb is $72. That's damn ridiculous. But I can't seem to find any other compatible bearing anywhere besides pyramid parts and I'm not sure what to think about them...

Does anybody have any leads for a better priced similar quality nearing set? Or cross references??

The Pyramid bearings are not even close, I returned mine and even sent them a take off OEM and they said they could not match them and yet they still advertise these bearings knowing full well they do not fit. Rip off.

American Sport Bike doesn't seem so pricey, since that price is for a pair

Factory - $34.00 each

Maybe this is a stupid question, but have you visited a bearing house? Neither HD nor EBR make bearings. They buy them in under contract from some bearing maker. In engineering terms, the use of an existing bearing is far less expensive than designing and manufacturing something new. So, there is a very good chance, these bearings will be commercially available off the shelf. One more point, you folks better get used to this way of procuring parts, because going to a dealer will soon be unavailable.

The steering head bearings can also be taken apart easily and the ball bearings replaced, it is the ball bearings that usually fail first so if caught early they can be rebuilt.

Might check with vxb bearings, they carry bearing for just about everything.

Very true. And yes, I am on my way to a shop now actually.

The oem used to be 20 something $$ a set. The current price is over 200% of what they used to be. I don't care what kind of bike it is. 70$ for a set of steering head bearings is ridiculous. I understand that's what Al has to charge. Not blaming him.

I'll post up later with what I find.

200% ? :-)

The exact same thing happened when HD had the oil return on national back order on my 96S1 in 1997. The local independent shop went into town and had one made.

I just shopped 2 bearings for my 96 S1's front wheel. The PM wheels are:
Front wheel - 2 ea 6204-2RS

6204-2RS is $3.00 to $18.00 on google's first search page. How much more would it be for the steering head?
