What part needs replaced when the water pump is weeping? There was an upgrade for the 2010 model year. What exactly was changed? I went to my local Harley dealer with the intention of buying an entire assembly, but they don't sell it like that. I'd have to buy separate parts and build it myself. I do not mind the cost. I just want it to be easy to repair. I know I can bolt on the assembly as a whole.

Well, looking at the printout I got from the Harley dealer with the 2010 part numbers, and comparing my '09 parts manual, it looks like the water pump shaft assembly, oil seal, ring seal, and thrust washer are all new part numbers. The housing is the same number, so the new parts should fit in my housing. It's a pretty good job changing out the assembly as a whole. Rebuilding the pump after it's out looks fun too.

I got it from a very good source that these are the parts needed to upgrade the water pump to the 2010 specs.

The parts required are the following:

R0022A.3AM Cover
Q0428.3AM Water pump shaft
CB0028.1AM Thrust Washer
E0015.1AM Needle Bushing
Q0430.3AM Oil Seal
Q0431.3AM Rotary Seal

Should be able to reuse the Q0427.1AM impeller

You don't need the tool -- just use a screwdriver. (you know that) But you do need the locking tool.

Need mine?

You will also need to plug that breather that goes away in the '10 set-up. I use an M8 bolt, some copper washers, and plenty of RTV...

Yup, I know all that. I was just putting the info out there. As busy as they are, Eee Bee Rrr took the time to answer my questions. I have the crank locking tool. I'm a tool guy. I like tools. I buy whatever I need when I need it. I've got this. I just need the parts. Going to Hardley Ableson today to place my order. I don't remember, Jim. Did we need any new gaskets?

We didn't because we were super careful AND lucky. It's a paper gasket, though. I'd get one just in case.

Do you have the access-through sockets to get the clutch cover open?

I have offset box end wrenches that work fine. I've had the clutch cover off a few times. Parts are ordered. I might take it apart tomorrow. I might wait till the parts come in. I got new gaskets. That clutch cover was not cheap. The entire set of parts was about $700. It's just money. I won't have to worry about being the guy that dumps antifreeze on a track day.

Another update since others might see this post. Eee Bbb Rrr told me those are the updated parts. I went ahead and bought a new impeller, as it was cheap. The needle bushing is an upgraded part, but my new 'clutch cover' came with a needle bushing already pressed in. I also bought a new gasket for the 'clutch cover'. Mine is running leak free now.

Pat or Jim,

Can either of you confirm if the updated oil and rotary seals would fit in the '09 cover and housing, and work with the '09 shaft part number, or does the pressurized oil seal require the entire set?

The reason I ask is that it looks like the job would be much easier if all you had to do was remove the pump housing and replace the oil and water seals. Was a press or the special installer tools required for the oil and water seals as depicted in the service manual?

I asked EBR what I needed to upgrade to the oil cooled water pump seals. That was my 'very good source'. They told me I needed the 2010 clutch cover. Funny name for that cover, because I think of the cover that houses the slave cylinder as the clutch cover. This clutch cover does cover the clutch and the rest of the right side of the engine, including the water pump. I cannot confirm if the 2010 parts will fit a 2009 cover or not. I just did what EBR suggested. Jim was able to get an entire assembly. On his, we just swapped out the new cover, pump already assembled in it. I do not have the connections he has. I had to get mine from the local Harley dealer and put it together myself. I did not need any special tools, but I am sort of a MacGyver type that can make anything work with tools and materials on hand. I pressed one of the seals in with a 3/4 PVC water pipe coupling and a bench vise. Haha.
