Home made crankshaft locking tool I don't know if it will take the 300 ft lbs but it will lock the crank. Got all the parts at the hardware store.

Interesting. Can you provide some specifics, such as:

1. Rod type, rod diameter, rod length.
2. Thread size.

I'd like to know how you determined the proper size for the rod and the threads, without having an OEM thread locking tool to look at. I guess you could just pull the cover plug for the locking port, and take that to a hardware store to determine the locking thread size, and that you could just try fitting a number of different sized rods into the crankshaft locking hole. Is that what you did?

I think you're going to need to use some type of hardened steel rod to avoid damaging the tool under torque.

Thats what I did got a bolt then cut the head off drilled a hole in it slid the rod 1/4" through it then put a weld on it made the hole tight. It is not harden steel though. It works great to find the holes in the crank. To hold the crank with the 300 ft lbs ? Took the bolt to the hardware store for size.

I'm not clear on what you said.

A. Did you mean to say that the rod is 1/4" diameter?

B. Can you tell me the size of the threads? Or do I need to do the same thing you did -- pull the bolt and run to the hardware store to determine the thread size?

Hoping you can help. thanks.

Yes 1/4". Old age on bolt size I think it was 12mm on bolt size thread pitch ?

thanks.

I'm kinda surprised that an Austrian engine maker would spec a 1/4" shaft size for the tool. I would have expected you to tell me it was a metric size, something like 8mm.

When the tool's shaft fits into the crankshaft, is the fit snug? I'm just trying to convince myself that they really chose to use an SAE-sized shaft. That kinda surprises me.

as far as that bolt thread size goes, do you have any nuts that you could compare it to? I'm just trying to avoid pulling that plug on the bottom of the engine to find out.

thanks again.

bolt size 12m-1 1/2 pitch. snug fit yes. I went to store and checked it. It was easer for me to go there than you to take your bike apart.

Wow. I didn't expect you to go to the store, I was just hoping you had some nuts on hand. Thanks for all the help!
