I've got some questions about using the 2010 rear wheel system on 2009 bikes, specifically a 2009 1125R. If you guys who are familiar with the new wheels could help me out, I'd appreciate it. A. What are the benefits of the 2010 (3 bearing) rear wheel compared to the 2009 (2 bearing) rear wheel? B. Do they use the same axle? C. I'm thinking about buying a spare set of wheels to do tire swaps on my 2009 R and I'm trying to decide whether or not the 3-bearing setup is worth considering. I plan to keep my 2009 2-bearing wheels. Thanks. | ||

The new wheel uses 3 sets of larger bearings that have a higher load rating, and an extra set of dust seals to prevent water intrusion. The axle is different, the part where the bearings touch has a larger surface area to allow the third bearing to contact the axle. The axle is also coated (anodized?) to prevent corrosion too. The diameter, length, and so on are the same, you can even use the new axle on the older wheel without issue. If you do any touring, the 2010 wheel is a must in my opinion. I've had the bearings fail out of the blue several hundred miles from home, it ain't fun! | ||

A: Lower rate of bearing failures B: No C: You can mix 2- and 3- bearing setups, I believe. The difference is the axle. So you use a 3- axle with your 3- wheel, and retain your existing 2- axle when you are using your existing 2- wheels. IMHO: Most, if not all, of the used wheels you will find are of the 2-bearing set-up. With a quality traditional or hybrid bearing, you aren't going to experience a lot of bearing failures, especially considering your miles are going to be distributed among sets of wheels. So, I'd say "buy whatever makes sense for you to buy." | ||

This are the part numbers of the set. Bearing Wheel x3 package E0005.5AK Spacer Wheel Bearing x1 package G0620.5AK Dust Seal x2 package ---> This is curious the plastic bag is from an HD spare part not Buell. EA0002.5AK 62x30x4 Rear Axel x1 package G0321.3AM I get a complete set because an idiot guy when he did my first rear tire change didn't saw the right unscrew direction, and squeeze the spacer inside the bearing. The parts, one year and a half ago, need 3 weeks to get the dealer, so I bought one set at Lakeshore for future problems. (Message edited by Ros on January 06, 2012) | ||

Just an FYI here - Right before I left the HD/Buell shop, HD had obsoleted the 2 bearing axle. The old 2 brg wheel uses the same axle as the 3 brg now. Note - you cannot use the 2 brg axle in a 3 brg wheel. Z |
