Rob, I didn't know you had a high side. Looks like there was nothing you could do. In the video that front tire just went crazy on you for no apparent reason. I'm glad you are ok.

I've seen Shawn's DSB bike up close before and I was amazed at how much character that bike has. I also had the chance to meet Shawn and his wife before and they are just some of the best people you could ever hope to meet. Very friendly and genuine folks. You've saddled up with the right people Rob. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Where's Shawn's ace mechanic at? Did he sit the season out?

The crash was entirely my fault. As mentioned in the video, I was riding GP shift and Shawn's bike for the first time. Shawn's brakes have WAY more initial bite than the stock 1190 pads.
So I screwed up a shift going into the turn and in trying to correct, stabbed the front brake and that was that.
First thing this week I will be changing all my bikes to GP shift so it becomes second nature.
I've learned that the 1190RS has too much power to not race GP shift with quickshifter. The bike will pull a wheelie in almost every gear. So you need to be able to shift in mid wheelie to get the wheel back on the ground, without backing off on the throttle.

It really provides a sense of the skill it takes . . . and I say this with total respect for your talents Rob . . for guys like Shawn, Danny Eslick and Geoff May to manage (they don't harness it, they manage it) the potential of these bikes.

I also, having ridden (with similar results) a bike with a GP pattern once. . know it's almost impossible to jump back and forth . .

I am REALLY enjoying coming along for the ride Rob and really appreciate your openness and candor about the various stages of the experience. Your enthusiasm is damned infectious.

Rob,

The videos are great... thanks for that.

And, once you go GP shift, you won't ever go back.

AK-GAS is the shit, eh?

I have to say.... Higbee is one of the nicest racers I've ever met. I wish him the best of luck. Can't be any more happy with my Shorai LFX14L2-BS12.

My bad, I was halfway into the video when I wrote this post. Didn't know the guy highsided. But...Catalyst and Cal Superbike Schhol.

Funny you should mention CA Superbike as I was at the CODE RACE clinic the weekend after my crash. I was still so sore, I could barely get on the bike and almost canceled. But I knew I had to get back in the saddle ASAP and regain my confidence.
It was a great tuneup and by the end of the second day on the 1190, I was turning the fastest laptimes, save for the 2 pros. This was in a sea of BMW 1000RRs, a couple of which were built to over 200 HP.
So I am a big fan of Keith Code and would recommend his school to every rider.

Wonderful video Rob. I can't get enough. Looks like Shawn is as expert a crew chief as he is a racer, a rare combination.

Jake,

>>> so court....when will we find out about the one off ohlins on the 1190??

"One off"? What do you imagine they do, allocate the suspension among the 100 production bikes on a time-share basis? ; ) I think you've confused "new" with "one off." What do you want to know that would avoid exposing Ohlins' proprietary information?

I had the chance to speak with an Ohlins tech some years ago during testing of the XBRR. At the time he was excited about a new line of forks that promised to be much more user friendly at the race track, meaning not requiring an Ohlins technician to tune them. Maybe that product is finally hitting the market.

>>> i would of thought being so exclusive would've been a huge marketing technique for Erik Buell Racing???

Getting the word out about customers achieving race wins is a much better marketing tactic. Letting the moto press and race teams get that word out, and effectively so, seems to be a brilliant marketing strategy. Advertising new parts and exclusivity is okay, but actual achieved results are even better. Factual tangible information like the actual unprecedented low weight, the engine performance, braking performance, and the amazingly diminutive unsprung mass are more relevant to racers than the newness or exclusivity of a certain part. That said, I'm pretty sure that EBR has indeed mentioned the cutting edge technology of the suspension. See Rob's 2nd video, the factory tour with Erik.

Not sure why they don't pay it more heed on their stats page at www.erikbuellracing.com/motorcycles/1190rs/. It's a good question. The answer is likely that they are much better motorcycle designers and engineers than they are marketeers.

Jake,

From Cycle World:

quote:

The suspension is almost literally the best money can buy, with the Öhlins fork fitted not with its usual “road and track” damper cartridges but the 30mm Öhlins racing cartridges that May uses in his 1125RR—and that Eric Bostrom ran last season in the Cycle World Attack Performance Yoshimura Suzuki SuperBike. You can tell because the fork can handle big compressive loads like a wheelie landing with soft aplomb. The rear shock is an Öhlins TTX, also the top choice for Superbike racing.

From Motorcyclist Online:

quote:

Suspension is from Ohlins, custom-built to Erik Buell Racing's specifications at the Ohlins USA race shop in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The fork uses the same fully adjustable 30mm cartridges as May's racebike, and the TTX shock is valved and sprung specifically for the 1190RS.

Awesome video; thanks for posting.

Dude, I have to say it- I cringed when you put an adjustable wrench on the rear Ohlins shock height adjustment (and it slipped!) on a $40k motorcycle!

Please keep in mind that there are a lot of racers winning lots of races on the Ohlins forks and many swear by them. But I believe that Shawn is in the top 1% of all pro racers in terms of his riding skill and knowledge of setup. Shawn helped develop the Traxxion forks, so he knows exactly what they will do, so did not have to learn what they would do. You can't ride at track record pace if you are wondering how your suspension is going to react. It's all about the rider having absolute confidence in the bike. Putting familiar suspension components on an unfamiliar bike simply eliminates that variable from the confidence equation and frees the rider to focus on learning the rest of the bike.

The 30mm Ohlins Kit is good stuff. You can actually buy that kit for retrofit into your 1125r forks:

http://www.ohlinsusa.com/us/index.php?option=com_c ontent&view=article&id=168

A few of the guys down here have this set-up and it gets good reviews.

I do think CycleWorld overstated it a bit suggesting an ordinary (though very good) oil bath damper technology is "the best money can buy". Gas Charged forks are generally regarded as a performance upgrade, and certainly the Ohlins gas charged products cost a fair penny more than the 30mm kits do...

The Ohlins suspension is impressive, more so the effort and dedication put in by the Ohlins team.

There will be a funny story about the Ohlins pieces, actually one key piece, on the 1190RS in the next book.

By the way . . . thanks to all of you who bought 25 Years of Buell. The last book sold the other day and there won't be any printed until the next edition. It was a very exciting project and has yielded it's own subset of funny stories.

My personal favorite . . . the signed book I sent to my 82 year old Mother got lifted from her office. She asked me to send her another to keep at the office . . . "and write something in it".

I overnighted a book to her with " . . . Mom, you owe me $24.95 plus postage. Love, Court".

It's a hit.

Thanks again to all of you.. . you guys and gals are amazing . . . exciting day for Erik and the Elves.

Actually, I just reread my copy the other day. I was cleaning out the hall closet and moving some of the books I have stored there, and my casual flip through the pages turned into a three hour flip fest, as I slowly migrated from the hallway to the couch. So thanks Court...I didn't finish cleaning the closet.

You never do . . . you never do.

I am home today (I'm working 7pm - 7am storm restoration this week) and just went to Home Depot for 13 more of those shipping containers as I continue the "Perpetual Quest to View the Basement Floor"
