I have a 2009 CR with about 6000 miles. I have had no problems with the charging issue. I have the upgraded harness.

Just wondering if every one with a 2009 or 2010 is having the issue or are there people with tons of miles and no issues.

I'm about to take a road trip and just figuring out how scared I should be. I already went from Michigan to California with no problems.

This gets asked every few weeks. There are many on here with 09/10s that have not had an issue.

If you are really scared that the bike isn't going to make it, invest in a teleporter, those never fail.

Sure - that explains the fly! - lol -

No problems with mine so far, however, keeping a close eye on the threads - I'd like to see this rectified as well.

There are only a handful of people with over 10k miles and no issues, from what I've read. There maybe more that don't post.

6,000 is when mine started to crap out.

Jdugger,
Not questioning you...but "even a sign of it"...I don't think stators fail "slowly" as perceived by the rider. The insulation may fail slowly, but there is no indication of that to the rider. One MOMENT the insulation fails "through" and the stator shorts. Game over. Happens quick. No warning. You have the battery to get somewhere or call a tow truck.

Why not make a poll out of it? Exclusive to 09-10's of course. Will give you a half decent idea of the failure rate. Multiply that by the number produced and you'll have an approximate number of total failures for those years.

> but "even a sign of it".

Comment comes from guys saying their voltages run low. Mine don't at all.

Even if I don't ride it for a couple weeks and it's a bit down from sitting, within a couple of minutes of taking off she reads 14.2 or even 14.4.

Not at all. I lug around in town all the time. I dont sit at a lot of stoplights though. Im generally on the move 99% of the time. I also watch my oil level closely. I always run just a little over the full line. Im not sure if it helps any but I figure what could it hurt.

On a side note for anyone worried about taking a road trip. If I were to lose my stator on a trip, I would have someone else in my group run to the nearest auto parts store/walmart or whatever and buy a car battery, wire, and a tie down strap. Ill fasten the auto battery to the rear seat with the strap and wire it in. If I have a long ride Ill unhook the headlights. I drove my old samurai for a whole summer without an alternator. I could easily drive my sami 300 miles or more without a recharge.

Funny you mention this. I'm reminded of a conversation I had with Tony Stefanelli I had a few years back.

I was having a little bit of an issue with oil in the airbox, and had taken to running my '08 with 2.6 or so quarts instead of the "perfect" 2.7 quarts. He suggested, even warned, against this because of what he said was a concern for "bulk oil temperature".

Well, a little more oil would lower that temp just a touch... and might be the ticket.

Just don't wind it up. You will have a mess.

16k on my cr, no failures. I think the battery is time for replacement though, the original harley thing is still in there. How long do those generally last.

I'm seeing 4-6 years average for this battery 65958-04 and it's mirror image 65948-04.(parts counter job the last 3 years)
That's when regularly ridden and on a tender when not on the road.

I got Loretta Dec 18th 2007 and I have the OEM battery still.

On the couple we have seen in our shop, it still looks to me like there could be an issue with the oil flow and a lack of cooling at a cretin point caused by the sealant and clamp. They all seem to burn at a specific place. I am sure it's also a result of the electrical load, the that glob of sealant does restrict oil flow across where the stator seems to fail.

Now, for those who have had no problems you should list if the majority of your riding is in the city, stop-and-go, or country-side. RPM levels and heat-sink opportunities might be a factor in this as well.

2010 CR and no stator problem, but my upgrade harness failed after 1 month. the replacement harness seems ok, but voltage drops off very quickly when in traffic.

Hi, 2010 CR and no issues so far.

I don't ride much. I average 1500 kms a year and bike is probably around 2100 kms now. Most rides are in the country and would average 100 kms per ride.

I normally ride in summer and it gets hot here in Perth (35 C - 40 C).

Bike is always on trickle charge when not ridden and has Barkers with matching Erik Buell Racing ECU.

Buelldyno_guy - interesting theory and would explain why there is so much variation in mileage achieved.

2 years and just over 9k on it. Mainly open roads, speed 5k or above except in stop and go. Orignal battery, original stator, Harness upgrade was done when I purchase it new. No issues so far-have road one trip of 2.3k with no glitches what so ever.
