Okay here goes. I have a 2008 1125R with the "good" stator. Problem is that I have power loss at low RPM unless I'm connected to a battery tender before riding. I get bad throttle response until around 6000 and then whoa... hold on.

So, would the Mosfet VR upgrade help this issue by reducing voltage drop? Any other solutions? I know that 09 model owners are having stator rewinds done. Should I consider a rewind?

Go into diagnostic mode with the bike off, check that your TPS percentage is 2% when you have no throttle input, and it smoothly goes to 100% as you slowly open it up all the way. If your bike does not hit 100%, you need a TPS reset or something is binding your throttle cables.

789 - I bet you have the same issue I just dealt with (2008 1125R with 5800 miles). I had very low charging output, so that the battery would drain in just 20-30 minutes of riding with high beams on. Looking at the battery voltage in diagnostic mode, it would get down below 11 volts, instead of being at 13-14 V idling as it should be. Eventually the low voltage warning light (battery symbol) would illuminate.

The symptom of this low voltage was that the throttle position sensor would get a (growing) dead zone coming off of idle. As you twisted the throttle, you would get nothing, nothing..... BOOM! The transition point would grow from 5%, then 10%, up to 30-40% throttle as the voltage continued to drop. If you weren't ready for it, it was quite scary going from zero to 40% throttle instantly.

While 2008 models don't have the reputation for stator problems of the 2009 bikes, it felt to me as if one of the 3 stator legs may have failed. Turning off the high beams would allow the bike to re-charge the battery in 20 minutes or so and the throttle dead-zone symptom would disappear.

A few weeks ago, the charaging system died (almost) completely, and I limped the bike into the dealer. They replaced the stator, rotor, and voltage regulator under warrantee (2 months left). Now, the bike idles at 13-14 volts even with high beams and fans on.

We'll see how long it lasts!

Here is a pic of the stator they replaced. I didn't see any obvious signs of damage/melting, but perhaps some of the more experienced people here can.

Also, the VR that was replaced looked perfect - no signs of overheating or other damage.

So they couldn't be arsed to actually diagnose the fault and just swapped eveything out...Not sure I'd bother visiting them if I wanted to actually get to the bottom of a problem, but on the other hand I guess it's nice to have new pieces just before the warranty is up.

Still sounds a bit lazy to me..

I just saw a bad stator that was removed from an 09 and it looked like part of it had been in a fire. Yours looks good by comparison

That makes sense. I never really thought about the "why," but I did notice my bike got increasingly unhappy and easy to stall out if I let the voltage drop below about 12.0V. If it got down to 11.8 or so idling, I'd often end up stalling it out trying to take off. I learned to just bump the revs a bit and keep my high beams off. : )

That stator is as good as new.
Bad stators look bad, smell bad and taste bad.

Wish I could have your old stator for a spare...

: )

That's good to hear. Well, that sounds like what my bike is doing. I'll have to check the voltage when I ride. I put mine on the battery tender for an hour and it went green. Went for a ride and things ran fine. I still may spring for one of those fancy voltage regulators though.

I asked to keep the take-offs (thought I might need to pre-order a Custom Rewind), but the service guy said they had to keep any warrantee take-offs in case the factory requested them back.

Yeah, I think its a stator/voltage related problem. I did have one time though riding when I started hearing a noise. It was a whirring intake noise like a turbo sound. It started getting louder, I cruised into the gas station, shut off the bike, checked things out, started it up and it ran fine. I think it may have been that noid thingy closing my intake butterflys while I was trying to drive. Whats the deal with that thing? I have an Erik Buell Racing ECU now but should I still take that thing out?

The race ECU will never trigger that thing, so it's just dead weight up high. May as well take it out...

26.7k miles on mine(2008) and ZERO electrical issues.
HID lo-beams, 35w, and heated grips, used often, LED(XBLights) taillight, original rotor/stator/RR, battery, 09 IC since Oct09.

Yes, you have the "good" charging system.

Ooooh my bust, nice catch Frank.
All I saw was 2008.
A CR BUILT in 2008 is a 2009MY and has the "Problem" stator/rotor set.

that's not nice at all. I can't understand if this is a official recall or not. My dealer never told me nothing about this. I obviously knew about the issue (the 2 years warranty is now ended), and I asked if there was a electrical recall scheduled for my bike, but the answer was no.
What's the cost of the recall outside the warranty?

An official recall even outside of warranty is provided free as per law and regulations. The only thing is I have checked with the NHTSA and they don't list any official recalls for the '08-10 1125r.

There was no recall. If you are referring to the harness and relay for the stator, it was an optional product program.

Buell(HD?) did two types of recalls - product campaign and Safety campaign.
Product campaign has a time limit, Safety does not.
A run of your VIN thru HDnet(@dealer) will tell recalls involved and status.
PM me your VIN and I'll run it for you.
