I have an 09 1125r and it has a failed stator (the second) we put an 08 stator in it and removed the shunt. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Its still not charging. Am I missing something?

Did you put an 08 rotor in it too?
From what I understand, to use an 08 stator, you need an 08 stator, 08 stator cover, and 08 rotor

You removed the shunt?

Are you sure that's what you mean?

The shunt is the VR, without that how are you planning on converting the AC output of the stator to DC to charge the battery?

And like Dktechguy112 says, you also need the 08 rotor.

The jumper plug was removed the one that is installed in the "upgrade" I thought the voltage regulator was the same. As far as the rotor I did not know they were different. The cover went back on just fine so I am not sure how that would effect it. Has anyone here done the 08 conversion instead of the rewind? I may need a new post to ask that

From what i have read the rotor is different .. and from your experience .. the 08 stator has a smaller diameter than the 09. hence it would go back on ..

My understanding to possibly explain the no charge is the gap between the rotor and the stator would now be too great hence not allowing the excitation of the magnets to produce anything.

I was looking at the 08 stator as a solution also however per the service manual a heat tool is required to remove the rotor nut .. and i dont have that tool nor want to go down that path ..

Chose to go for a rewind on the failed 09 .. reducing the output to similar spec to the 08 and the rewind service have been doing this for years out here in OZ for other bikes .. using the best epoxy / lacquer and highest rated wire they can source ..

results so far are promising ..

I initially left the harness in place .. however on 2 phases .. when the relay kicks in the out put was a little low .. 12.4 V.

Otherwise all operated as expected ..

So now have removed the harness and waiting for time to go for a blast ..

You must use an '08 Rotor and Cover. I just did it on my race bike. It works great.

Where would one source an 08 rotor and approx cost ??
I see Erik Buell Racing has the stator & cover but no rotors.

The jumper plug was removed the one that is installed in the "upgrade" I thought the voltage regulator was the same.

OK so you DIDN'T mean "removed the shunt" you meant "removed the subharness".

The "shunt" IS the VR.. the subharness is ummm well, the subharness.. The VRs are the same for all model years (i.e not very good)

You do need the 08 Rotor though..

Just out of interest why are you doing the work has the warrenty expired?

What's different with the ignition covers to where you have to change that also? (same part numbers in the parts books '08 & '09)

I know a guy that just changed to the '08 rotor & stator, using the 'original '09 ignition cover, no problems.

I think you can go that way (08 stator/rotor in a an 09 cover) but can't do the reverse as the 09 stator is physically bigger..

I'd be surprised if they were the same part number (the covers that is) best bet is to shoot Erik Buell Racing a mail and ask their advice.

Bear in mind they are very busy (yay)}

If the 08 09 part numbers are the same, then I assume it would work. EB R told me that I could not use my 08 cover with an 09 stator/rotor.

I bet they stopped producing the 08 cover, since the 09 cover works with 08 and 09 stator, I bet they just sell the 09 cover now since it works with both.

Email Erik Buell Racing, they know what's up and have a lot of these parts for a lot less then harley. Not to mention that they actually have the parts in stock, where as harley has backorders on almost all buell parts.

You can use the 09 cover as long as you have the 08 stator and rotor. They order the units assembled 08 stator and cover. Idk why they don't offer just the rotor and stator. Must be a ebr thing and harley-davidson parts issue. Erik is probably ordering those units and allowed to do so because he takes his engines apart and reworks em. Idk just a guess? If they just sold him parts it wouldn't be fair on harleys end.

The 09 cover is an 08 cover with some extra machining.
I am pretty sure this is a rare case of 2 DIFFERENT parts having the SAME p/n.

Functional fix combinations are:
08 - cover, rotor, stator
09 - cover, 08 - stator, rotor
09 - cover, rotor, stator w/re-wind

Note - whichever stator you use, you MUST use the same year rotor and an 09 rotor/stator won't fit in an 08 cover.
Also, I do NOT know a way to look and tell which is which, the puck is the same on both... know YOUR parts.
