Hi.

I just bought my 1125R --- first "real" bike in over 25 years (I bought a Blast first to remember how to ride lol). There are a million things I love about the bike, and (I hope) just one thing I hate: the metal frame, under the airbox and behind the radiators, is FREAKIN hot --- hot enough that it's uncomfortable in jeans and it actually hurts my thighs when I'm wearing my office clothes (I ride to work).

This happens mostly in the daytime (it's about 90 degrees F here), and it doesn't matter if I'm on the freeway at 80 mph or stop-n-go in town. The gauge says AT is anywhere from 100 to 135 F (once I stop) and CT is running between 190 and (one time) 205.

The Buell specialist tells me this is all normal, especially since the bike hasn't had its first service/oil change etc., and that at any rate it's going to be hot. He seems to know quite a bit about the bike, and the manual confirms CT up to 220 is normal. I am a total n00b remember, but this is REALLY uncomfortable, especially for a bike that is "built from the rider up" or whatever.

Anyone have any thoughts about this? Similar (or contrary) experience? Know of any aftermarket parts to dissipate the heat?

Thanks in advance,

Marco

What year is the bike? There's a reflash for the '08 models that have lowered temps by quite a bit. I would see if yours has had this flash.

Hey Marcodesade,
I'm surprised that you haven't received more replies to your question. I don't own an 1125R but would be interested in responses because I own a Uly that puts out a lot of heat to the frame and would consider going to the 1125R but not until the heat problem is solved. Good luck,
Pete

Mine is the same way. The AT gauge is totally useless. The temps you experienced are similar to mine. I have not had the re-flash yet, but I hear that it does lower the bike temp considerably.

The blue part of your bike (is yours black with a deep blue part running diagonally down each side?), that you refer to as the frame, is actually the gas tank.

I find that jeans work much better than work slacks (I, too, often ride to work).

On a cooler day (like in the 70s), the temp is considerably much more tolerable.

Sounds like you have an 08 that is minus its 3rd reflash. At least one owner reported after this latest reflash that

"Heat between my legs is DEFINITELY much better. I can touch the frame with my bare hands after riding now and leave my hand on it versus merely being able to quickly pat the frame to avoid feeling pain."

Now: with a name like marcodesade, I don't know that pain is something you're wanting to avoid.

Here's the (current) link to archives on the 3rd reflash: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/397812.html?1221997999. You've joined the club, so you'll have to read up on your new baby. The post will tell you how to ensure which flash your 1125 has right now, and how to be sure the 3rd one "took" after your dealer does the electronic update.

mine does not like sitting in traffic as that is where the temps build up. this summer i took some long trips and the bike got very warm at speed in 100 degree air temp (205) at 85mph. since reflash 3 the highest i have seen at any speed is 185 although at a stop in traffic for long periods causes temp rise i have not been stuck in a traffic jam since the latest reflash. verify reflash with your dealer and avoid traffic jams and city traffic.

Granted it's not supposed to be hot enough to burn you, but you would do well to get some proper riding gear... Leather or Textile with armor.

Hey Marco,

I'm going to assume your bike hasn't had the 3rd reflash brother.

The frame (gas tank) previously got VERY uncomfortably hot, and was no fun at all. Even cruising on the freeway I would often have to ride with my legs outside of the rider bubble to try and cool them down.

After the 3rd reflash, immediately it was apparent that the hot frame (gas tank) problem has been fixed, it's amazing! Sure it'll still get a little warm, but nothing like what you're experiencing.

Let us know how it turns out, and welcome to the world of an amazing bike : )

The 3rd ECM update does a WORLD of good. Mine gets to the same temps everyone else is seeing/ feeling. I ride in jeans and vented/ padded jacket and boots. Do I get hot? Yes but, not only on this M/C but on the others I own. Actually my 1125r/t is cooler than my ST1300. SO guess which one gets the most miles in the summer and which one did I ride today at 45deg F ;+}

Get some miles on your 1125 and get the 3rd ECM update.

P.S. Welcome to the group.

Marco -either ask your dealer to do a printout on h-dnet or PM me your VIN and I'll check for you.
I work at High Country H-D/Buell in Parts.
I can run your VIN and it'll tell all the Campaign Status for all the recalls/updates.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. I took it in today and they reflashed the ECM (it had already been done, BTW). Still VERY hot. Today, after about 10 miles at 70 MPH on the freeway, CT hit 211 (it was about 90 or 95 outside). A couple people have suggested installing heat shield under the airbox. Any thoughts on this? Any other aftermarket products? Do I just need to man up and get used to pain in order to ride? Or is there something seriously wrong with this bike? I *am* a total n00b, but I can't imagine having to sit on a hot stove to ride --- not even for this otherwise unbelievable bike.

I've got to say, the high CT --- only 9 degrees under the top "normal" operating temp, and 19 degrees before the warning lamp --- also has me concerned. Really, I've been riding pretty much like an old lady (no offense, grannies). How much do I have to worry about the thing having a meltdown on the road?

Do you have any stored engine codes?
Are all the cooling fans working?
Is your coolant level OK?
Are the radiators free of debris?
Is your oil level correct?

There are additional overheating troubleshooting items listed on pages 152 and 154 in the owner's manual.

There is a heat shield on the 2009 models. You could have it installed, but you'll have to pay for it.
