There are many levels of "dirt bikes". The simplest way to determine what kind you want is to figure honestly how much blacktop and gravel you will ride..If you are going to ride there and back, camp, ride interstate and dirt etc. the 08 KLR is a bargain at about $5,300. Bikes over 650cc are just plain too heavy off road no matter what you see on Advrider.com. Try and pick up a loaded R1200GS, ULY, Vstrom, 950 Adventure etc....you better be built like a WWF contender. I have a KTM 450EXC, basically a race bike with lights, it is not happy on the blacktop even though it is street legal but is fantastic off road. Pure off road bikes are great at the 250cc range due to the weight factor as in a KTM 250EXC. Motorcycles are full of compromises so there is no the perfect motorcycle for every situation. If you don't get if right the first time..try again... Jay Leno is the extreme...lucky devil.

Tufyuma
welcome to our "little" family.

It's good to see a owner here looking around at what there customers are doing and talking about. I hope you stick around for a while and post your input and thoughts. Many of us are looking forward to the release of the dirt bikes ( uuuuuummmmmmmmm!!!!) Thanks for the pic.

THANKS TUFYUMA! I was wondering where that photo was. It does give a bit of an idea of clearance and point to competitive markets. I will start squirrling away the cookie jar money for it. Counting the days. (btw, I am way more excited about the dirt squirter than I am about the 1125R, I just dont ride that way anymore)

Not to jump to conclusions, I love the idea of a Buell MXer, my preliminary beef would be the sharp, lower shrouds...likely to catch the boot top.
Another thought, the yellow isn't bad, but with each of the big 5 running distinctive colors, why not run the light blue from the XBRR as the major portion of the MX side of the house? At least it is unique from Yamaha. Silver was deep sixed by Cannondale a few years back. I like how the BMW prototypes have a distinctive color scheme. Just a thought. Brand recognition and image being so large in MX.

One more thought...I would think the first model MUST be a pure MXer( 450/250 4 stroke) for legitimacy, otherwise you find yourself dealing in dependent models that have no real meaning alone, i.e. supermoto...just an iteration of a MXer at it's core. KTM finds huge success in niche bikes, but the brunt of their models are AMA/FIM MX/SX legal.

OK! This is the third time I tried posting this!

The Rotax 449 is what I would like to see in an XB frame for the street, Now THAT would be a Thumper, did you see the size of that piston? Its like an Extra Large Pizza!

Get on it Bombardier

The rotax 450 from the Can Am quad is quite the powerhouse too. I have some saddle time on that, and I do love the low end grunt.

The only other thing is a 450 Vtwin : D The Aprilia is nice, but I dont like the required service intervals... and of course the cost of it being an Aprilia for repair after I break it... Cuz I will break it; I am not light on my toys.

This would also keep me off of an ATK and keep from sending money to HD !

The KDX is choppy at high RPM, but is finally jetted right and otherwise fully rebuilt. I suspect a bad connection somewhere or broken electrical bit. I have a friends KDX-220 in the garage, so I can swap parts until I find the culprit.

If you can find one in decent shape for $1000, it's one heck of a fun bike, and easy to work on and get parts for. I love the "dial a wheelie" aspects of it... Feels a lot like my friends CRF-450X... but with a little less power and a little less weight.

I don't know. Erik does street bikes because of the great experience he has with them. He'd have to have a design team that specializes in dirt-bike designs. It would be cool, but he wouldn't have the type of support that the Japanese market gets. Remember HD made several dirt-bikes, so did Indian.

Just picked up this ol' sweetie last night for $500. It runs and drives and has a street legal title. 1985 Suzuki sp600. Four stroke single. 14k on the clock.

It will get turned into an old school motard this winter. Excellent for street, railroad tracks, jumping speed bumps, trails, and all around hooliganism..............

That'll be fun. I almost bought one of those for $600, but it had a crank knock, and they started himming and hawing when I asked about the title.

I'm guessing this thing has been sitting for 10 years or so. All of the hoses are brittle and coming apart. It's leaking more oil than my buddies 67 Triumph. But it runs. No knocks or weird noises. When you put oil in, and ride it, brand new oil leaks out..........
