Bike-urious seemed to nail down the EBR vibe from the New York show very nicely.

Thanks for the link. EBR seems to be on a wave of positive publicity right now.

Very nice write up for EBR.

I still think it's a shame when Victory gets credit for the Octane when it's basically a 95% copy of the Indian Scout. I love the scout, and was really excited when I heard that victory was coming out with a mid sized cruiser as well. I was dissapointed when I saw it was the same bike, and it didn't even look as good.

I'm putting together a full custom Scout right now with Kevin Dunworth of Loaded Gun Customs---hopefully in time for the Austin Hand-Built show. The new Scout is one of the best platforms for customizing to come out in recent years.

I love it. I'll get one someday, looks like such a great bike. I think victory makes some really nice looking bikes, but the scout is pretty is pretty much perfect in my eyes(it could use a bigger front fender if I really wanted to get picky). The Octane just looks like someone left their Scout parked on the set of Sons of Anarchy and someone got their hands on it.

In the past three years we picked up a mortgage, two new car payments, a new kitchen, and a baby, so it'll probably be a few years before I can start thinking about putting anything else fun in the garage.

I test rode a Scout a couple of weeks before I test rode an 1190 SX. I know where my money is going. (Hint: does East Troy sound familiar?)

Other than that, I think the Octane looks better than the Scout. If I were stuck having to choose between getting a Scout or an Octane, I'd choose an Octane.

I got to Demo ride a Scout a little while back(the engine really reminded me of my old XB9, aside from not being a paint shaker). I'm anxiously awaiting the day that EBR has a dealership close enough to me to be able to test one of those bikes. In the grand scheme, I'd definitely prefer an 1190 over the Scout, but considering that my riding is 95% commuting, and I have plenty of fun on the S1, the scout started to appeal to me as something that'd be comfortable and easy on the way to and from work, when I spent plenty of time with my feet on the ground and riding at a slower pace.

If the Scout didn't exist, I'd probably love the idea of the Octane. It's not a bad looking bike by itself. I'm just disappointed that it's basically a Scout with cut down fenders and a little windscreen.

^ There are several threads at advrider.com expressing disappointment from a lot of riders that the Octane didn't turn out to be a modern "standard". Victory teased with that "Project 156" Pikes Peak bike, then instead of building a street version of that just built another cruiser.

I wonder if EBR would have any interest in building a "standard"?

I understand why they don't, but I'd be the first in line if EBR built anything close to a fast standard. Deposit in hand right now. I think there's a whole demographic out there looking for an American-built sport standard not built by Harley. My Scout build is headed that direction.

What keeps people from thinking the Black Lightning isn't a "standard"? Too light? Too much power?

I always thought of the SX as a naked standard. The two things that might get in the way of people thinking that way are a fairly impractical looking seat (which by most accounts is actually not any worse than a traditional tuber or lightning seat) and an engine that is still percieved to be really high strung (instead of detuned for reliability).

My personal motorcycle budget for the forseeable future is going to be spent sending kids to college, but if I had the hobby budget, the engine would be my only "hmmm" factor regarding buying an SX and making the adjustments necessary to make it a one up rider XB12XT alternative.

The kind of power the current SX makes from a 1200ccc twin just feels stretched and a little risky to me (<- purely an emotional perspective, but one that would be hard for me to get past).

Pragmatically, I bet a stock SX engine is more reliable than an XB12 motor...

When I was younger I hated hearing that engines were detuned for naked models(although back then they were usually pulling 5 year old motors for naked bikes that only made 100hp to begin with). Now that I'm older I get it. I'm more than happy to trade that top end for some serious midrange.

KTM obviously gets it and they're benefitting from it in every shootout I've seen. It's awesome that EBR didn't change a thing from the RX to the SX, but the biggest thing they point out when they look at dyno charts is that even though a bike might make more peak power, the KTM just makes so much more power everywhere else. It's the same reason everyone here thinks Buells are so much better than peaky I4s in the first place. The low end/midrange is more usable and more fun, and yet EBR made a race bike with 185hp, and stuck the same exact engine in their street bike.

No complaints from me, it's still more power than I'd ever need anywhere in the range, but that's the reason I see KTM edging it out anytime the two are compared. 9 times out 10 the KTM is making more power.

I think it's a great base for a Sport-Tourer. I'm going to prove that when I get mine. I hope there's hard luggage available soon; if not, I still have those soft bags from RoadGear.

Supposedly, there's a road opening up from Dawson City that will go to the Arctic ocean. Up the Dempster to Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuc. I think I want to be the first to ride that road on an EBR.

And I've never even been close to that area. I may be nuts, but my life ain't boring!

I'd put the 1190SX at the very sporty end of the "standard" category, but I think a lot of people are looking for a more traditional looking motorcycle, but with modern performance. Check out the latest iteration of the Triumph Bonneville: long flat seat, mid-mount footpegs, gas tank on top, round headlight, good suspension, and 1200cc water cooled engine.

Sportsters used to be in this category, until they went to fat 16" back tires, forward mount pegs, and suspensions with ~2" of travel front and rear. The new Sportster Roadster is headed in the right direction, but it's down on power compared to air cooled Buells and weighs a good 100 pounds more than a tuber or XB.

I think it would be pretty cool to see what EBR could come up with along the lines of a traditional standard.

I doubt EBR is going to produce anything like a Sportster or Bonneville!

I agree, that's pretty much what I think of if I described a standard. Bonneville, CB1100, Zephyr 1100, pretty much modern UJMs. I feel the SX/BL are better classified as naked sportbikes like the Z1000, FZ1, Tuono, and such.

Me too, and personally I'm fine with that

I totally agree with this, I just think it would be very interesting to see EBR's take on such a bike. Imagine a 185 HP, 450 pound, but completely docile looking motorcycle. It'd be the ultimate sleeper.
