The November 2016 issue of Cycle World has an article about Peter Egan's love affair with his Ulysses. It's the only bike he's ever kept for seven years, and he still loves it. He uses it for road use only, which makes sense; it was touted as an all roads vehicle, not an off road bike.

Having owned a 2006 XB12X and a 2008 XB12XT I can readily understand. I keep hoping that EBR will come out with an SX based equivalent. Not necessarily the mythical AX, but an SX with a comfortable seat, bars and pegs and with decent hard bags and a wind screen.

I hope the folks in East Troy are paying attention.

I've got a bridge like that in Coal Country in Pennsylvania that I travel across when visiting my cousin Nancy.

The older I get the more I like "old"

I never owned one, though I lamented NOT buying the XB12XT version. The only thing that held me back was range on a tank (or "frank") of fuel.

I put the street tires back on my Uly a couple of months ago, don't like them anymore,
Going to the shop in a few minutes to finish polishing a set of heads, then the TKCs go back on.
They are perfect for my riding style mixing blacktop and dirt roads.

That's two of us . . . I just signed the deal for the house of my dreams today. It's within a chip shot of a number of those bridges and LOTS of "old" stuff.

I have a sneakin' suspicion I may be riding more.

:-)

On a related note, there's another column by Egan in that issue that relates he recently had a stroke! He's OK, but that's a scary thing to read about my favorite motor-author.

Ride that bike through Ohio court, and I'll paint that exhaust for you, and we can chill on the deck with a cigar while it dries.

7,000 miles? Get out there and ride it, Mr. Egan.

It is truly sad that the magazine folks couldn't write such nice stuff back when Mr. Buell was still in the game. As I recall, it was almost like a conspiracy against him and all things Buell.
Having stated that, I have to say that I feel pretty much as he wrote. I love mine.

Lots of alignment with this string:
- Still excited by the industry's latest and greatest, but I'm "liking old" more and more.
- My Ulysses may be the least attractive Buell I have but it's by far the most versatile, and does everything very well - "this one stays".
- "House of my dreams", bought ours in the Black Hills this past spring.
- "may be riding more" (< 5k this season - worst of recent years) with more visits to SD in the future (better climate, great roads), more miles are hopefull.

Nice article.

Someone send him a 2010 rear wheel assembly.

Nice article.

Zac,
Awesome Uly pic.

Dan, I thought the same thing. The power of media is immense. I also still think about how knee-jerk foolishly HD acted. But when a myopic bean-counter was handed the reigns, coupled with financial crisis and saboteurs inside the corporate hierarchy, Buell didn't stand a chance.

Congratulations on your new home Court. Send directions!

SteveF, Mr. Egan has multiple motorcycles plus the CW fleet to divide up his riding time.

Not take it off-road? Good thing I never got that memo; I would have missed Baja.

That looks like a lot of fun. I'd still call that one a road though, just not a very good one. : )

I could make that easily (if it is dry) riding carefully on my XB12X, XB12XT, or if I still had it my XB9SX or M2.

But I could take a straight line (not even following the smooth part) up that hill on my KDX-200... and not even have to drop down from 3rd gear...

The Uly would be a nice bike to use to cover 600 miles of pavement before you do 50 miles of road like that before you do another 1000 miles of pavement. Yum.

Nice bars and bark busters!

Hell, I've ridden roads like that (and WORSE) on my 850lbs K1200LT. Not INTENTIONALLY, of course... but "stuff" happens.

Roads like that is where the Ulyesses shine with the right tires. The lightest most torque of all the adventure bikes and the suspension on the X can take a hit! This bike never got the credit it deserved....

As long as the roads don't get muddy the Uly on PR4's will easily navigate a road like that. I love roads like that and was just on a few in Colorado. Love getting back where few will tread!

First post: Peter's article struck a note and always ready for a new moto experience was all I needed to start looking for an X. Located a good candidate and did a fly'n ride... seven hundred miles later I pulled into my driveway grinning ear to ear. Next came the mandatory exploration of the mechanical details of the bike. Very impressed. 1500 miles over the last 3 weeks and all is well. Thanks Peter.

Resized pic...

Cheep - it is an '09... from what I've learned the most obvious visual indication relative to the '08 is the black engine cases. The mirrors were horrible (vibration), fortunately the original mirrors were included and I installed them. So far I've added a Zero Gravity screen, PIAA lights, VIED lambda shift , tires, tall seat and completed the first 10K maintenance. I've noticed quite a bit of coating loss on the rear sprocket and two hairline cracks running across the inner surface of the belt. Need to figure out what to do about that.

Nice. An excellent year.

For the mirrors, the Tuano mirrors on ebay (see knowledge vault parts listings) are very nice, nicer than stock IMHO. I use those on my XB12X.

Those CR mirrors shouldn't vibrate too badly (I have a set on my XB12XT) if mounted well, but they aren't a direct mount, so whatever kludge the PO used might have been a problem. They are pretty crunchy though, and easy to break, and really expensive to replace. Great signal visibility though.

The belt solution is easy. Order a new one, put it on in the garage, and take the current belt off and ***VERY GENTLY*** do the band saw fold to coil it up, put it in a big zip lock bag, and keep it in your side bag or under your seat with the 2 or 3 tools you would need to do a roadside belt replacement.

Or ignore it and keep riding. Especailly if you are in situations where it would be no big deal to call for a truck / trailer so you can do the belt replacement closer to beer. Cracking on the outside isn't and indicator of a failing belt. The first reliable indicator of a failing belt is either a big hole in the middle of one from a rock, or a belt spitting out the back of the bike.

I'm glad the article shows some Uly love! I always take shit for riding a Buell from the BMW/KTM/pretty much anything else crowd. I've got a 07 Uly with over 55k on it and my son has a 06 Uly with just over 50k on it. We have put almost all those miles on them too. We just finished a trip of 46 days and 8,500 miles across the US with almost 1,000 miles off road. We had zero problems with the Uly, zero! I'll try to post pics of the trip here if I can figure out how to post pics... hahaha!

BTW I own also own an 1125CR and my son owns an 1125R too but really love the feel and sound of that old Harley design motor...
