The VRod engine did apparently start as a Buell excercise, but then Harley Davidson "helped", and added quite a bit of weight to the thing. The result was a pretty nice power cruiser motor, but it wasn't a sportbike motor.

The Helicon, with some tuning, is now making 185HP in EPA trim. And is very light.

HD wanted an engine they could use in several models and, as Bill said, they "helped" to make that happen, and ruined it for use in a sport bike.

...but if you want an engine that weighs as much as a whole EBR...grab yourself a VRSCR Street Rod. Inverted forks, mid controls, semi-clip-on bars, and actually a decent performer considering the size and wheelbase.

Also, I think the vrod engine is 1130 or 1135. Buell ended up with an 1125 because HD didn't want the Buell engine to be bigger than the HD engine. It's amazing Buell was able to do anything under the weight of that beast.

Original Revolution motors were 1130. Later were 1250.

I looked at a lot of used V-Rods before buying a used Uly.

Only bike Harley ever built that used that engine and was halfway decent was the Street Rod. Naturally, nobody bought it and it was discontinued. Only the miserably uncomfortable V-Rod line is left.

@Jaimec,
Here's an interesting article on the Street Rod:

The same HD influence that effected the revolution motor also hurt the Helicon design. The engine should have been 1200cc not 1125. Everything else from valve and port sizing dimension wise seems optimized for 1200cc.

I rode a Street Rode the first year it came out. Although it wasn't in ANY Buell's class, it was far better than anything else the Motor Company offered. Civilized seating position, decent motor... the only thing I didn't like was that big, heavy 19" front wheel they gave it (for styling purposes, I presume).

Once you were up to speed that thing had so much gyroscopic action getting it to change direction was EXHAUSTING. Worked best on long sweepers because you'd wear your back, shoulders and arms out trying to wrestle that thing down a snotty back road at speed.

Nail on head. Wrong motor for a sportbike.

MAYBE for a Uly type. Maybe.
Gotta be light to extinguish corners and leave in a hurry.
