Not a cafe but still a nicely done bike.

Back to the news item, I love this quote from Wandell:

"We are pleased with the continued moderation in the rate of decline of retail new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales again in the second quarter. "

That's kind of like the captain of the Titanic telling you: "Great news! The ship's not sinking as fast as it was a couple of hours ago!"

Maybe, "Since the bow snapped off, the stern is floating fine."
Or what was that line from a skit or commercial?
"Where did all these @#%^ing icebergs come from?"

"We are pleased with the continued moderation in the rate of decline of retail new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales again in the second quarter. "

That line summed it up quickly didn't it Hughlysses? Basically the same spin as the first quarter. Maybe they'll unveil the second coming at the dealer show today?

my problem is the statistics cited. really frightening, if the percentages of all the "heavyweight" bikes, (650cc and larger), is close to being correct... who are these people, buying these things? and where are they hiding them?

one thing i have noticed - i see a lot of bikers during the week - only a few hardly's. on the weekend, it's the reverse - lotsa hardly's. seems motorcyclists like real motorcycles and weekend poseurs like big fat cruisers...

ymmv,

+1 Doug s! I commute almost every day and see all kinds of bikes....Honda, Yamaha, HD, ect. On any given weekend around here, it is ruled by HD! (Unless it is raining!!)

I read an article in the AMA magazine "American Motorcyclist",it was an interview with the head of BMW motorcycles,(sorry, can't remember his name),he had just returned from a long MOTORCYCLE trip and was pictured wearing a motorcycle jacket. The story said he had worked his way up from the auto division, through the ranks in the moto division to where he is now.He seemed to know exactly where he wanted BMW to be in the future IE;small beginner/scooter type bikes then cruisers, because 60% of sales in the U.S. are cruisers. It struck me as odd that BMW would have someone who knows and rides motorcycles in charge. He didn't mention golf in the story, how odd.

What amazes me is the current Harley management attitude that racing is not an important component of a motorcycle selling strategy, especially in the United States. Americans race everything from lawn mowers up. You would have to live under a rock not to know that.

I think that racing might have effected BMW's sales this year.

However, racing involves alot of technology ,and that technology would not improve any harley because most of it would not apply to a softtail or fatboy except for abs brakes.tech for that is readily available without any real investment in manufacturing capability for H-D.

So why would they race?

You hit the nail on the head.

Hey, sorry I have missed all those great rides that you and Pellis have been organizing.

You people seem to forget H-D does race. They drag race. They are helping fund the largest single manufacture racing organization presently the AHDRA. Now will this single minded approach be wise in the long run maybe not, but don't say they don't race. Now that AMA dragbike has folded the AHDRA is now the largest motorcycle dragracing organization.
