So I don't know if there has been a posting like this or not (I tried posting in the guest section) but here goes. I've been looking into getting a Buell for my first bike, I had some dirt experience (2 seasons) about 10 years ago and very little street experience. I was looking into a Blast but I am afraid I might not like it after one season. The one I would love to get is the XB12Scg! I keep hearing about how you don't want too much power in a first bike, but isn't that a matter of self control? Fit is pretty much the first thing I looked into (I only stand 5 foot even) thats what brought me to Buell, now I am hooked on getting one. Advice? Experiences? Dealer or Used? Pros and Cons? Just looking for some feedback.

Tami:

Call Jeff at Danbury HD/Buell, his number is (203) 730-2453 ext.36.

Tell him precisely what you posted there and explain your needs.

A Blast would be a most excellent bike for what you are wanting to do. He can fix you up with a good used one. Ride it, get comfortable and develop your skills.

You're gonna have. . . as we say in the Buell world...a BLAST !

Tami - Welcome to Badweb.

My standard advice, which would work particularly well for someone 5 feet tall, is to buy a used Blast.

Given that you have ridden motorcycles before, you can probably handle the Scg. If you take the Riders Edge class before you buy a bike, that will give you some experience on a Blast and allow you to gauge your comfort level on street bikes. After that it should be easy to decide which bike is for you.

If you are more comfortable on the Blast, get one. If you're worried that you will quickly outgrow it, which is a possibility, then buy a used one. You will be able to sell a used Blast for approximatly what you paid for it.

You asked about power and self control. That is not totally the issue. For someone like me, who had never been on a bike before, it was easy to make little mistakes, like poping the clutch, or getting scared and grabbing the clutch and front brake w/o letting go of the throttle. Such mistakes have less potential to turn into disasters on a low power machine.

I do wish they had a Riders Edge course here in CT. I saw that Gengras HD/Buell was suppose to be getting one in Mid-Summer I will probably end up taking the state course (anyone know what bikes they use?). Anyway thanks for the input everyone! I hope to be saddling up soon.

Hello to all,
This site is an awesome idea and I’m quite surprised there are not more postings from more people.
My wife and I will soon both be riding and have some questions about what to buy. I personally have years of experience riding in the city and highway (and dirt for that mater) but not on anything like a Buell. My wife has never ridden (except on back) and will be a newbie. I have a powerful urge and am strongly compelled to purchase a XB12S. I think I’m ready. What to do for the wife remains a question. Can a Blast roll comfortably with a 12S? I don’t want to discourage her early. She will be taking a Michigan State riders course for beginners in September. This is our angle to start to get to know you all. Thanks in advance for all your help and worldly advice.

Blast can keep up with anything, if the pilot of anything will make allowences ;-}

ours cruised around nicely at 80/85, though the engine felt a mite busy at that speed -- it's a strong bikel, easily prepared after newbie events, light, and handles great

Welcome.
The answer is yes. The Blast can roll comfortably with the xb12 or any other bike for that matter. With out mods you would be hard pressed to top 100. But for reasonable travel around stuff it is not a bad bike. Depending on her comfort she may be able to put serious miles on.

Thanks a lot that settles a big issue for me.
I'm think I'm clear on what I need to be happy. The XB12S is my ticket. I see there are very little difference between the various models of 12S Are there any REAL differences between them that maybe I should consider? My knowledge of Buell is what I've learned the past few months on the net and through magazines. These bikes are the perfect combination of style and performance without having to go Jap. All my bikes to this point have been Spanish or Japanese. (Bultaco or Honda) I think that I'm going to take the dive one way or the other; I just want to feel a little more confident in my choice. Especially if I'm considering buying two at a time.

I rode a Blast for over a year before I got my big Buell. It's a great bike for a new rider, and your wife may keep it for a long time, some on this board (guys and gals) keep theirs forever.

Welcome.

I know this is going to come off as a "Stupid" question but I am a newbie to the riding circuit and will need pointers here and there. 1.) How do I know how much fuel I have??? 2.) What am I doing wrong that when I upshift and the bike sounds loud and doesn't make a smooth transition right away??? 3.) When you have it in Neutral and you are just warming it up, are you suppose to give it some throttle??? I ask because I didn't and it stalled out. "Thank you in advance for any answers that are given"

1) fuel: on my S2 I know approximately how many miles it'll go on a tank of fuel, so I use the trip counter; reset it to zero at every gas stop, and the miles will tell me how much I have left. Of course I have the reserve setting on the gas valve, so that'll let me know when it's time as well.

2) upshift; is often a question of practice to the point where your throttle hand matches the RPM of the motor with the speed of the bike. When you upshift the RPM should drop, so you should be rolling off the throttle at the same time you apply the clutch, then shift and release the clutch (relatively) slowly as you gently roll on the throttle again.

Keep in mind that you may not need to pull the clutch lever all the way to the grip before you shift. Often pre-loading the shift lever with your foot and then a quick, short pull on the clutch lever is enough.

I sometimes sit on the bike in the garage (motor off), make motor noises and practice shifting up and down. The end all goal (I'll never get there) is a rheostat smooth shift with no jerking or other unpleasantness.

Practice, practice, practice ... : )

Standard operating procedure on home built airplanes, dune buggy's etc.

That magic moment when you can sit in the thing, & it sorta looks like the finished product. (squinting hard ) Believe me, the motor noises are spontaneous. Seats & motors usually are not involved. yet.
