I think you should send me Chris's contact info. . . it's important that I get to him first to keep him from being swayed to the darkside and coming under the influence of less grown up folks that I.

: )

There are about of us who I as already in the "Ulysses Tractor Beam" and beyond saving. . . it's just a matter of what order we fall in. . . I'd place you at "significant risk"

I don't know, yet. I know his name, where he works, and the town he lives in, but that's it!

He is a member of BRAG (it came with the bike...), so maybe he appears on a roster somewhere...

I told him of our trip to Homecoming '05; his comment was something to the effect of "holy cow!"

Well now you've went and done it...One of our HSTA (Honda Sport Touring Association) officers here in Missouri, Steve Long, took a liking to the Uly and we directed him here...He took so much of a liking, and after reading a bunch of stuff on BadWeb, that last Friday he traded in his FZ1 for a new orange Uly...We're already calling it Pumpkin II and I have to turn over my stuffed "Pumpkin" from Pumpkin I to him...It was a gift from Kevin Lacostello...Steve took the Uly and introduced it to the dirt on Saturday...He reported that it's like riding his dirt bike sitting on a pillow...Steve's Uly is the first non-tube Buell in the club...So thanks to any and everyone who had a part in this, even if it was just unknowingly providing research reading material for Steve...

Holy ****! That shirt is great! That's what we get for e-mailing a bunch of dealers about the 200? I hope mine arrives before Saturday, because it would be an honor to wear that shirt to the 200.
Once again, Buell and the people associated with them have exceeded my expectations.

Court...Me thinks Steve is a genius...This is really going to be interesting here in STL as the others get a chance to see a Uly in action ridden by a really good rider...One of Steve's other scooters is a ST1100 with a bunch of highfaluttin suspension stuff done to it and he can throw it around pretty darn good...He's already ravin' about the low end grunt of the Uly and, other than track days, we really have only one road around here that we can turn loose all those high end ponies on things like an FZ1...

There is a road down in Iron county MO coded MO KK...It runs south off of MO 32 west of Bixby MO and east of Salem MO...We normally run it down to it's intersection with MO TT and then TT down to MO 72...This is a mining truck road so it is built like I remember the tank roads at Fort Knox KY...Super strong road surface and everything is cleared way back on the sides...It's not too unusual to see a buck fifty on the speedos on KK and it's easy to run 120 for the entire thing once you get in just a couple of s'miles off of 32...I took Jerry on it when we rode down to AR two years ago...Man, if they ever catch us on that thing we'll be taking up a collection here...

Funny story...Find where TT intersect 72 and go east to B highway...Then take B south...If you ever do this don't say you weren't warned...So I'm leading one of our First Saturday club rides and there's a newbie on a Blackbird (radar activated, huh?)...In the pre-ride we talk about a certain left hand turn on B that turns...and turns...and then REALLY turns...And to keep you in the dark there is a rock wall on the left side of the road that you can't see around...It's really a double apex if you ride it correctly...BIG decreasing radius at the very end...We get to Potosi and take a break and before saddling back up I get everyone together and say "now, remember there's a really bad left hander on B"...And I tell them how to recognize it upon approach...Next thing I know we're all standing over the Blackbird and rider attending to him and he looks up at me and says "Is this the corner?"...Kevin's gone on to become a good rider and welcome part of our group and now we all laugh like heck about it...And there is a corner down in southern Missouri named "Blackbird Corner" in his (dis)honor...

Question for you and any others who wish to chime in...If you had to choose to spend two riding days in either the Glacier NP Going-To-The-Sun Road area or the Chief Joseph/The Beartooth Highway area, which would it be?...We don't have time to spend two days on both this summer...

Thanks,

Bob

>>>Court...Me thinks Steve is a genius...This is really going to be interesting here in STL as the others get a chance to see a Uly in action ridden by a really good rider...

You are only seeing the tip of the Buellberg.

You may recall, when the Ulysses was introduced, that one of my favorite writers (ME!) predicted less than half would sell to folks who had ever ridden or owned HD and/or Buells.

At that time I'd even been so bold as to propose to the folks at Buell that they start getting ready to accommodate the influx of BMW and Honda folks.

The BMW and Honda crowd are their own kind of ducks. If you have ever ridden with or around anyone on an ST1100 you know you really never convert them, they just ease over with time.

The XB12XS is a better bike than these folks think. Their impression, pre-ride, is that it's another odd sort of Buell that the Buell fans are understandably excited about. They fail to see it for the world beater, all around "take me where I wanna go Mamma" motorcycle it is.

This only makes it more fun. Because when they RIDE the Ulysses, it takes little more involvement from Buell as they begin to slowly sell themselves . . . a voice in their head starts chanting "you are too good a rider to not be armed with this bike".

You may recall that I recently said there were 4 or 5 people who I consider already within the grasp of the Ulysses "tractor beam". One of those is my long time riding partner and mentor Chauly (I call him Chuck") who posted above.

He's an engineer who owns more bikes than Buellie Dan, purchases with Henrik-like attention to detail and value, thinks like Blake and is among the best 3 motorcycle riders, in terms of skill, I've ever known.

He's a bright guy but powerless to the lure of the Ulysses. He's in the final stages of denial (it's a great bike, but so is my ST) at this time and just beginning a phase I call the "Tom McCarroll Extreme Parsimoniousity" stage wherein the victim spews senseless babblings hinting to things like "yeah, it looks like a pretty good bike, but I think I'll wait a year or so until I can get a used one". This will be followed by the SacBorg "it's a Buell and you know something’s going to be wrong the first year" nonsense.

Any of these people will be putty in the hands of a skilled dealer . . . . get one of them near Dave Stueve and they be known as a "NEW BUELL OWNER".

Too cool about the HSTA guy. My bet is that he's a skilled rider and will be an asset to the Buell community. In fact, many of the Buell riders in the STL area have been doing lots of riding with the HSTA group so I'll be eager to hear more.

Thanks for the update and get me this guys contact info if you get a chance, I'd like to drop him a line and welcome him.

Court...Here is Steve Long's contact info...He's the Missouri/Southern Illinois Co-director of HSTA...

<allegrodigital@yahoo.com>

And I know you're correct re the beemer and Honda riders who get exposed to the Uly...The service manager of Dale's H-D in Mt Vernon IL is a long time beemer adventure rider...He's very active in that community and on their website...Jay rode a Uly to last falls Gateway BMW Club's Falling Leaf Rally held each year in Potosi MO...I was pretty amazed to see him on it instead one of his GS's...He was loving it and still is...And I know personally what you mean as my current ride is a ST1300 and before it was a R1100RT...Both resided in the same garage as "Pumpkin"...Now I just need to manage, somehow, to stay away from DaveS...And you're correct that all of what was once a very active BRAG club here in STL are now riding with the HSTA...We had a, uh, dealer sea change here that kind of precipitated that...Along with the fact that they (HSTA) liked 300 to 400 s'mile days just as much as we did...John (V2win) is currently on a FJR1300 and a S2…Josh on a FJR1300 and his Buell’s…Me thinks the trend may be reversing with the Uly?...

My best to you,

Bob

<<The BMW and Honda crowd are their own kind of ducks. If you have ever ridden with or around anyone on an ST1100 you know you really never convert them, they just ease over with time. >>

Nah, we straddle the Divide! I've done it for years with my S-3: when the S-3 breaks, the weather is marginal, or Karin is coming along, the ST1100 gets the nod. She has actually straddled the Uly at Lakeland HD-Buell, and was impressed with the room on the back. Pretty tall, though, one of her comments about the KTM: "It's so... tall.... and ORANGE..." The GS1200 we rode in CA last summer was not too comfortable for either of us due to the seat design, so that wouldn't even "be a contendah".

As far as buying one, yet, we have to sell a bunch more hot dogs!

And as far as the riding praise, to quote Col. Potter: "Horsehockey!"

Chauly...Boy can I ID with "we straddle the Divide"...And, as I recall, Col Potter was one whale of a horseman so I'm believing Court on that one...Unfortunately Pumpkin and I had an encounter with a wrong way driver at night on a divided highway that I was lucky to survive and Pumpkin wasn't or I'd still have her in the garage...And the Uly really is the first offering from East Troy since the demise of the tubers that is more fitting for us, uh, mature riders (and their knees)...So, as Court said, it is most definitely on my radar...

Thanks,

Bob

Racerboy, From Several years of riding my 98 S3 from seattle to ND each summer, I can highly reccomend East Glacier to St Mary + every road back and forth and up into Waterton Park they are amazing. From total twisty's to WFO sweepers to amazing drop offs to some really incredible scenery, geez.....you could spend a week. Of course ya will be watching out for the gravel patches extra ordinaire in spots, but what else is new in the mountains.

Why I think I will, Bob! Thanks for the heads up. I kinda lurk and try to find a moment to chirp in here and keep my foot out of my mouth. The S3 is doing great, I think now that I have changed/fixed everything possible I have a keeper. I am looking forward to meeting more of my fellow NW ( really Bad Weather Bikers...anyone up for another 30 day stretch of rain?) bikers. As usual St. Helens is doing it's siren call to me...
Take care Bob

OMG, it's a rip off having to pack up this muffler and send it. Between packing and shipping, it's costing me about $40 from UPS, that's not including paying shipping cost for the return. Sheesh.

Which?
The Buell race muffler is a DIY and with the kit from American Sport Bike you should get great life out of the packing.

Fellow Buellers,
I posted this picture in the Minnesota/Western WI section but thought others might get a kick out of it.

As most here know Tommy Casto is a friend of EB and a big Buell fan in general.

This is the full shot of the picture the band uses on it's concert promotional poster.
On the poster, the left side of the shot is unfortunately cropped off.
But, here it is in all it's glory!

Hmmm, I wonder what kind of bike that is....

Oh yeah, they're playing this Friday less than 5 miles from my house!
If your in the Minneapolis area, don't miss this show!
Good stuff!

John...I think we have decided to stay an extra day in Glacier NP after hearing from you and several others...We still have a slack day built into the tour so if we haven't used it by the time we get to the Beartooth Highway we can dawdle there a while as well...And by ND in your post I'm sure you meant North Dakota but here it means Notre Dame...GO IRISH!...

Thanks,

Bob

I'm thinkin all the folks whose votes count have already voted on the legality of the RR --

interesting to watch the opinions of the fan base overall -- my guess would be that their opinion of Buell's race bike will suffer from a form of HD backlash . . .

Bob,
I have stayed here twice at this hotel, it is at St. Mary's, the eastern terminus of the going to the sun road. It is about 100 yrds from the entrance. Nice, not a rip off, decent bar.

Have fun! and good call I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the area.
Geez, I liked Notre Dame until the huskies got rolled the past couple of years. But we got Willingham so give us abit we will be just fine.
Go Dawgs!
PS I was refering to Devils lake North Dakota, on highway 2. Great place to freeze your rear or get assaulted by mosquito's.

They got about 50% of the hardware out. Turns out one of the screws had to stay because scar tissue around the screw and the main nerve was so bad he didn't want to chance severing/damaging the nerve. So it had to stay. That is a big as$ plate...About an 1/8th of an inch think and about 4 inches long. Its some really nice machine work : )

Pain is pretty bad. Back on Percocett every 4 hours for a little while. I go back later this week for the followup and to check the stitches for hopefully removal.

Nope, between the rod that goes from Knee to Hip from a car accident in '02 that shows up on the detector that has the lights on the side that indicates where the metal starts and ends just like a sawed off shotgun...to the remaining plate, and screws, I still set them off : )
