Howdy to all. Well I joined today as a new user, because I was told that this is the official buell web site. I do have a problem with my bike, I own a 2001 x1 lightning with 9,000-ish miles. I tried to start my bike the other day and my fuel pump was racing faster than usual, then started to spew gas from either the pump or or a line, couldn't} really tell. Well seconds after, the pump stopped working as I tried to start my bike. Needless to say, the fuel pump doesn't make the usual hissing sound it used to when attempting to start her up. So is this a fuel pump replacement or maybe a fuse problem. Sorry if this is a dumb question but my last bike was a 1985 yamaha FZ 750, so which the difference between night and day with what I have now. Please any suggestions would be great. Thanks...

Doc,
If when you say it spewed gas, I assume you mean internally. The pump will shut off once up to pressure. I have learned to ignore strange sounds from the pump. Your issue may be flooded plugs and/or an inadequate charge on the battery. These bikes need a strong battery. My injected bike likes a little throttle when starting cold. If it spewed externally you have another problem. Hope this helps.

Doc,
When I drained the tank on my S3 I thought that I could just disconnect the fuel line from the filter and run it to a gas can. I found out that the pump only runs for a couple of seconds each time it turns on, even if the line is open.
I did have the hose split at the filter after I had it off and on a bunch of times while I was troubleshooting my injector problem. I was glad that it decided to leak before my ride than during.

Tom - post your question on the Big, Bad & Dirty Section. That's where you'll find other Uly riders that can offer some advice and information.

FWIW, anybody had a speeding ticket in Sumner County in the last year or so? I got one and was wondering if anyone was able to get driving school versus the points?

I've been able to do this before in other locations. I have a clean (no points/ accidents) record and would like to keep it that way. I even called the "Clerks Office" and they just told me to show up at court. Other locations allowed me to do the drivers school and then submit the diploma and my record was clean again.

BTW this was by a State Trooper on Upper Station Camp Rd. ( a lightly travel county road, just my luck he was cooling off in the trees, it was 104deg that day)

Thanks
Neil S.

Well, yet a new problem. Stopped for a short break on a gorgeous ride and saw oil dripping off the right side of the muffler of the 08 Uly. Oil everywhere from rocker box down. Not air cleaner. 2.5 qts only. That just about does it. 7000 miles. I got a cold weather only bike that surges in 70 degree and above weather, that comes with a tech manual with wrong torques, a automatic muffler oiler and I can't see at night without accessory bulbs; and then its dicy... Taking bids. Keep an eye on the "For Sale Section". I'll decide what to do by tomorrow.

Sorry to see your "line" has been crossed. I don't make excuses for a new machine with problems. It just should be built right. With me it is just that I have bought so many vehicles with so many problems I have become maybe too patient.

I had a new 1997 truck with a bad engine at 600 miles(a $37,000 f'n truck). Several months later it went back after a lemon law fight(second engine was bad, AC wouldn't work, random brake failure).

Got another new 1997 truck and its engine went bad. At 3000 miles I built and installed my own engine. Five years later got another new truck that tried to kill me when the brakes locked up one wheel at a time on a wet interstate just after passing two semi trucks. It was in the shop six times for nine other fairly serious problems.

Then comes my second new Buell. It has been in for at least six separate infractions of the new bike has a problem rule. All fixed under warranty and most of the repairs were assisted by help from the BadWeb. If I had faced the frozen stares of the service writers, and the mechanic's doesn't know statement with out the help from the great people here, I would have had to bail out on the Uly. But I love riding this bike.

The '05 City-X was a flawless machine. 13,000+ miles and the only warranty issues were a turn signal wire coming loose and an unusual oil consumption problem. I fixed them both with advice from here. I would have never sold that bike, but I am so much more comfortable on the Uly.

Sorry to see it have to go Gary. I know you were looking forward to a good time with that bike. If it goes away I would still like a chance to ride out with you sometime, what ever you are riding.

Gary:

That is unacceptable.

What has Buell Customer Service told you?

I would have had them on the phone instantly.

Let me know. You are not the first one to report problems with a 2008 and I am eager to see how it is handled.

Wow! You guys on this web are the main reason I still have this machine. I like the machine too. A lot. It's just that the stuff that is going bad with this bike should happen to a machine with 50K miles on it. Not 7K. Great Scott! If this bike was out of warranty, I couldn't afford to own it. The surge, poor lights, and yes even oil leak would appear to be engineering and design problems. I even reattached the turn signals back onto the bike after vibrating off. And electronics in an oven isn't too sensible either. Nuts! I wanted to take this bike to Nova Scotia this summer and put it to the test. But its demonstrating such poor reliability characteristics that I don't think I want to go it. I got a million miles on two wheels and a he-- of a pile of bikes and I can be pretty certain that I'm not taking this one too far. Just started to bond with it too. I can't fault the dealer either. They jumped right on it. No questions. Great demonstration of interest and concern! I just believe there's too much hi tech, creative engineering to move two wheels down the road jambed packed into an enclosed, air tight package that holds too much heat and a engine management system that is not up to expectations. I'll see what I end up with when it's repaired. The 1125 better put on a better reliability show than previous machines cause there's some mighty stiff competition out there that has already proven its worth to the buying public. Fingers crossed for the best. Thanks for the positive comments guys. Yer the best!

I know there is a PS game and a XBOX game. Let me check it out when I get Home. I think it is PGR on the XBOX. The game on PS2, I believe is made by the same people that does GT.

I do not know if this is the right place to post this but I recently purchase a jacket for my girl for Christmas at a local HD shop and they gave me a "free" gift (for purchase over 300 dollars I think). It is rather cheaply built so I changed it.

So far I have the S1, S2 and S2 Signature Series and the Pegasus cover in the middle. As soon as I get a M2, X1 and S3 timing cover it will be complete and on the wall of the garage... Frank

my daughter got us one of those. i'll leave ours alone because of the 83 and the 04 that we have but that is a really cool idea though. i'll have to see if she can get another one to do that. you need to put that over on the old school section.

Good luck on your project. I would love to see you get it back to 100% mechanical condition and leave as much of the accumulated grime as possible. There are so many fake "rat bikes" out there and yours would be 100% genuine. I saw a totally hammered ironhead chop in Madison this summer. It looked like it had just been pulled out of a barn, but it ran strong and sounded great.

No matter what you decide, be sure to post a few pics. I want to see how it turns out.

Bill

Happy New Year to all you Buelligans!

I realized, again, that M/C riding cures a world of ills. Late yesterday PM I took the Bolt for a nice ride. 55 deg, beautiful sunset and some twisties. 50 miles later I returned home and pulled into the garage with a huge smile on my face. My blushing bride greeted me with a big hug and kiss. That's when I noticed that all my aches and pains had magically disappeared! This allowed us to have a FINE New Year's eve involving whipped cream, berries and...........

I digress, M/C riding is such a fine Rx for what is troubling one (physically or mentally). It just confirms one more reason for riding.

Anyway, the best of times to all, and to all a great year.
