I’ve reached out to him to let him know he needs to take a break from moving and check in here.

He is a member and you should be able to send him a message.

Thanks Jolly: )

Condition really doesn't matter, In fact worse is better for me

If he's west coast-ish and reasonable, I'll pick it up!

Buelljunkie or who ever gets this exhaust system. I was hopeing you may be able to take a few measurements of those headers and merge collector. Im looking for the measurements of each stepped section and the outside diameters of each length. Aparently measurements taken from the side at the middle of the pipe are most accurate. Been wanting to make a set of headers up for the buell the same length and step diametre with a merge collector the same going to baffle.

Some info that may be helpful...

Buelljunkie is in the Chicago area.

I saw the bike - and took pics - a few years back. Of course, they are on my computer back home while I am currently at HOMEcoming. Not sure if I would be allowed to share the pics I have or not.

The 1998 S3 header (which is what this 1998 S3T Defender would have on it) is the same header as a 1998 S1W header. Not sure what is So unique about it, and don't recall it being 'stepped'...

Hope this is helpful.

The stock 98 Thunderstorm headers are not "stepped"...but they are the only 2.5" early-frame s-bend headers out there.

Any other early-frame bikes (98 and earlier) would be non-thunderstorm engine bikes, with the 2" collector.

While not 'stepped', these are a one-year-only header since the frames changed in '99, and they went to the "T-bend" style.

I actually don't recall any Buell headers being "stepped" (if we have the same definition of the term), but the S2 headers were SECTIONED with visible welds, as opposed to being single-tube mandrel-bent primaries like the later bikes.

Ahh ok. My mistake. For some reason I thought these were the defender pipes for sporties. Didnt know there was a defender pipe setup on the Buell's.
Have been wanting to find those dimensions and make a set of Buell headers up similar only ending under the bike like normal for buell. Thanks anyway.

"Defender" is a 1998 Buell S3 Defender, a prototype police package that was built for the 95th Anniversary Harley Davidson factory event, and used to pace the race of champions as well as many of the parade events. What'd they build, Brankin...11 units? 12?

Hey everybody...so sorry about the delay. As Jolly said up top...i've been swamped with many things life has decided to toss at me, in addition to moving! From pics I have seen of other Defenders, this one is in pretty good condition...Brankin surely has more extensive exposure than i do and might be able to assess more competently than I can since he has seen it in person (albeit stuffed in my previously crowded garage). I will try to get some recent pics taken today (the bike is finally at my new house) and post them up. Thanks Jolly, Brankin and anyone one else who has posted....I'll update with pics shortly!

No. The Defender in the bike-urious article is the Defender that I own. If I recall correctly, on Dave's (Buelljunkie's) Defender, the only decals remaining are the reflective blue 'Buell' decals on the saddlebag lids.

Dave's right about the pics I have (as I remember) -
but as I recall no good angles or full shots were possible in my tiny garage

You know, I really should go look for those pics again...

All the Defenders are "the same" - all white 1998 S3Ts, with the Thunderstorm motor and 2.5" header collector, with blue and red reflective decal sets, factory fairing lowers with decals, and narrow saddlebag lids with decals. There are some variations in decal placement (done-by-hand production run), as Brankin and I discovered when looking closely at my, and his, Defenders...but for all intents yes, a Defender is a Defender is a Defender.

All...what...thirteen of them that were built?

that's pretty cool, if mine was set up like that I might be inclined to keep it. I am getting too stiff and old for the thing

If this works.... I disagree with the above, that all Defenders are same.
Mine is hand painted.... stickers are overlapped by color. I herd on Badweb, this is 1 of one..... the first one?
Also, have deep bags....
Of course no disrespect, is I am not an expert on anything but how to offend others!
Would like more information???

I just think its funny that its been two months since this "for sale" ad was posted- and several people have expressed interest- yet we still don't have pics or details of the actual bike being sold. Must not want to sell the bike too badly?

They were all decals.

Touchup paint was just that - touchup, for when the decals bubbled or peeled.

Did you buy that one in Maryland last year?

See my post above. They were ALL DECALS.

Believe what you want...I've talked to the people who actually BUILT these motorcycles. They were all decals from the factory, there was no "hand-painted" work for the logos. Every decal was reflective vinyl - these were police bike demos/prototypes/concepts, built for the HD 95th Anniversary events in 1998, as escort bikes for the various events (parades, races, etc). Some of the decal placement varies slightly (the decals WERE hand-applied), but there were no hand-painted logos. Period. First bike, last, third, tenth...none of them were "hand-painted".

I can guarantee that the decals on your particular bike bubbled and/or peeled. The owner didn't know where to find replacements or have the resources to have duplicates made from reflective vinyl...so they bought red and blue touchup paint to try and "fix" it.

If you like, send Brankin (1313) a private message here on the board. He's been in contact with the vendor who did all the original decals back in '98 - and he was one of the people who helped build these bikes in the first place.

I also have - somewhere, I think - a list of Defender VINs. Post the last four digits of yours, and I or someone else with the list will be able to tell you where in the production run your bike fell.

While not documented in paperwork (that I've seen), there are photos from '98 of at least one Defender with wide bags. THAT may be your "one of one" designation if it was the only one that had wide lids - but it's not because of touchup paint.

The ability of a few people on this board to speak factually about events at the Buell factory never ceases to amaze me. I've never seen anything like it for any other brand.

>>>.I've talked to the people who actually BUILT these motorcycles.

Those folks would be Dan Remington, Dano Lang, Tom Anglim and Jack Rhinehart. A couple other Elves likely had fingerprints on those bikes also.

Nothing was painted. Period.

They were all decals that Miller and Habbeger came up with somewhere. I'm in the Preparing to toss shit out phase and suspect I'll wander onto some boxes of interesting decals. I've got until October 1 to clear the area out. If I find any I'll send them to Brankin . . . he'll recognize them.

Kinda.

We also experimented with some sort of "internally circumferentially welded" stuff at one time. During the time I was testing a lot of S2 parts and pieces they sent ma a couple headers . . . along with 4 different heights of windscreens . . . . to test. Somewhere, in all the crap are my tests and side-by-side photos of the original and the test headers.

I recall (have to dig it out of the "dead bike pile") that my S2 header was sectioned - looked like "get this 90, weld it to that 90, weld it to that 45...".

Don't send shit to Brankin yet. There's an ROC bike that hasn't been called home yet...when he picks up his toys, he can have more stuff : ) Just bring it to MD. I'll siphon off what I can use and pile the rest next to the ROC bike for....whenever.
