Just acquired a 02 Blast w/3500 miles and the clutch seems to have no travel.

When enganging the clutch there is no friction taking place until the lever is about half-way out. So, when it does engage, it is like all at once.

The guy that I purchased the bike from said this is just how they are as he purchased the bike new.

The bike is ridable and you can get used to it, but it does not feel right and want to adjust it to have complete travel like most other bikes.

I am wanting to know if this is common or if I can adjust it.

Common - Buell's have a very tight friction zone - like all sport bikes.

I guess I need to ride another blast, this does not feel normal to any othe buell I have ever riden.

Is there any adjustment, besides that in the middle of the cable for slack?

Yes - the primary cover inspection plate comes off and you can also adjust from there; I'd lube the cable first to see if that helps, then go in and adjust per manual(an easy deal to do).

SJH, The narrow engagement band for the clutch can be helped a little by adjusting at the clutch like EZ says, but it's a pain to get to with the footpeg brackets in the way. You can use the cable adjustment to run more or less slack, which will change where the friction zone is during lever travel. Setting cable free pla at 1/8" feels totally dofferent than setting it at 1/16". One other thing to try is an M2 clutch lever. I tink that the short reach levers on the Blast make the narrow engagement band more pronounced than the other Buells.

Hey guys...! I took my new Mod blast Bike out today for a test ride..and the new CRG shorty Levers seems to change the travel too on my Bike...and it seems like SJH said...When engaging the clutch there is no friction taking place until the lever is about way more then half-way out. So, when it does engage, it is like all at once. I think we both have the same problems.

I don't thing this is normal...But Jprovo...!! can you give us more info on how to Set the cable free pla at 1/8" to feels totally different than setting it at 1/16".

how do we do this...??

Loosen cable at outer adjuster and use feeler gauge to set to factory specs - still it is supposed to work like that when you have it adjusted all the way in and adjust it - the crg levers - out for regular travel - in city stop and go - lol

Yep, That's been there awhile, basically the same thing that's in the manual. When they say - adjust the cable at 1/8" you can play with that setting to get a different feel with the friction zone.

James...I found out that when I replace my Clutch Lever, some how it got to tight, and there was no travel. I set it 1/8" setting and now I got much better friction zone in mid level....SHJ..., hope this will solve your problem, as it did for me...

Didn't get any replies so I am putting it here also.
O K adjusting my '03 P3 clutch made my jerking in 1st, pretty much, go away. I turned the screw counter clockwise till it lightly seated & then turned it clockwise a 1/4 of a turn. Did I turn it the right direction? What keeps the screw from turning when riding. Does the screw adjustment nut(spring loaded) supposed to have a pin, or something, that goes in the screw slot, to keep it from turning? Mine didn't. A picture would be cool. Thanks in advance for the replies...De

Isnt it the same as your S3T? Seems to me its the same type adjuster thats been on the Sportster for years.
There is no pin for anything else for the screw slot.
The spring and nut(lockplate) fits into the recess for the nut, that holds the nut in place. The screw is flat sided and fits into the cutout in the 'spring and nut(lockplate), which is held in place by the recess in the cover.
Are you missing the spring and/or lockplate?

Ah Ha, I finally see the light. I knew that the lockplate(nut)had to keep the screw from turning, I just didn't notice that the hole in it was flat sided and must have lined up perfectly when I inserted it. If it had not lined up, I would have then noticed it. Don't think my '84 XLX clutch had an adjusting screw & the clutch on my '02 S3T has always been O K so I've never had to look at it. QUESTION!! Did I adjust it correctly by turning the adj screw to the left till it lightly seated & then turned it right for a 1/4 turn? Thanks,,, De

Thats sounds correct.
I couldnt find my Sportster manual to double check if they were the same.
