Court;
My wife and I are new to this board but are not new to Buell motorcycles. We have his and her Buells.
We have recently purchased a 1991 RS and are looking for information on this particular bike.
The bike is pearl white, and came with the RSS tail frame and fiberglass, painted to match the rest of the bike. There is no seat pad for the RSS tail section.
The trip meter shows 301 miles and the odometer shows 305 miles.
Can you provide build information; number of bikes built with the RS/RSS combination?
Thanks for your time.

This is the bike you bought, unless I miss my guess.

1991 White RS-1200

It was an interesting bike and the RSS was an interesting model. There are only two times in the history of Buell, one in Buell Motor Company and one in Buell Motorcycle Company, where a model has been made exclusively for an overseas market.

You'll have the chance to read about it (I know cause it's the chapter I'm writing today - : ) ) next spring!~

I see you got the owners manual with the bike. There was only one recall on your bike and I can see it was done.

I'll check on the seat pad.

I've logged about 20,000 miles, including the 16 hour ride to ride one into the Guggenheim "The Art of The Motorcycle" (the ONLY motorcycle ever ridden into the exhibit in any of it's locations on RS-1200's and I love'em.

Congratulations!

Court;
That is the bike.
We were very happy to be the successful bidders. It looks right at home with our other tubers.
Were any of the RSs sold as "kit" bikes? And just exactly what is a "kit" bike?
Only one problem, it fits my wife better than me. Not really a problem, we both appreciate the bike and will enjoy it.

Court;
I was unable to find a list of recalls that listed the RS. What was the nature of the recall?
I have been in contact with Corbin in regard to the RSS seat pad. No longer available there, unless I take the bike to Ca. for a custom fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

The recall (I have the letter buried in this pile of stuff I'm working on) was nothing more than that safety pin looking thing in your rear Gambler brake.

Let me check on the seat pad. Not a difficult thing to acquire, I'd think.

Okay John . . . where to start with you? . . . it's too early for the "plumb bob out the butt" lesson, we'll work our way towards it gradually as you and the wife start to log seat time.

First thing we have to do, quoting Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Hero's is "stop that negative thinking".

If you want an RSS seat pad . . . well, it's simply no problem. They, made by Corbin, are in stock, the part number is M0090.1 and it's $228.00 plus shipping. Hush. . you're lucky I'm not charging you the $4.25 my time is worth. If you need one, just drop me a note and I'll hook you up.

Uhhhhhh. . . the recall. I'll find the paperwork and I'm betting you don't think I carry a complete archive of Buell tech stuff with me . . . there ya go again. . . snap out of the negative.

: )

Take a look at this . . .

1991 RS Rear Caliper - Gambler

Note the VACANT slot . . . there is a "safety pin" (go look at your bike, you'll see it) that secures the rear pads. The photo is of a bike with no rear pads, ergo the pin is gone.

You're going to LOVE this motorcycle. . . . lovingly built by hand by very nice people.

Court;
I noticed this pin the first time I looked at the bike. Very different from what I have been used to seeing.
I am interested in the RSS seat pad. What next?
The part about the "plumb bob out the butt" has me a little concerned. Ive been to three state fairs and a chicken fight but have not ran into that one.
Thanks much, John.

Gads. . . . call me a major pack rat. I am cleaning the basement, reconfiguring for a project and my wife tells me . . . "if you aren't using it toss it".

I tossed the first 3 cases. . . then the 4th hit and the lid came off . . . I, of course, scrambled to see what was in 1, 2, and 3.

All are safely back where they started and we are back at square one.

court,

I have enlisted the services of my neighbors grandchildren. They are intensely inquisative and instinctively find treasure where others see useless junk. You do have to bribe them by occasionally letting them keep something of value. My garage gets a thorough going over monthly. I am sometimes amazed at what they find. The girls seem drawn to dirty motorcycles and just have to clean, with a little work they make excellent detailers. Parents don't seem to mind as long as I don't injure them, I have become proficiant at getting Barbie electric jeeps operational.

Court what you call being a packrat has been a godsend to how many Buellers through the years looking for this, that, or the other thing?

I'd call it a salvage operation....or I'm sure that there is a better more colorful term we can come up with...anyone?...anyone?

Actually yes. I got a note from the 1125R team yesterday apologizing for not having had time to take the measurement. They are intensely busy.

He is going to have the design engineer contact me directly with the info, so I expect something soon and will report.

Could not miss the RS/RSS Owners Manual on top of your packrat treasure chest.
What year would that be for? Mine 1991 manuals appears to be a xerox copy in a spiral bound format.

Thanks, John

Actually. . . I think I have some of the spiral bound ones as well.

The service manuals were spiral bound as well. Don't go looking for the photos in the service manual. . . . that's one of those . . "uh, we really need to do that when we get time" projects.

Take it up with Mr. Gess.

Rsrss, congratulations I bought a Black/Gold RS1200-5 1991 model 6 months ago. Presently she is undergoing a sympathetic part restoration as the old girl has been leaking oil from every possible orifice for some time. But these are very special machines. Good luck. PS- My manuals are the originals that came with the bike in 91 and are spiral bound.

I find this site an amazing place. I'm not new to motorcycling. Over sixty years old and even used to own my own dealership. Won't do details as not pertinent. Just little background. Have wrenched on a lot of BMW GS's and Paris Dakar's and owned 26 of em. Love Buells. I am a guy who leaves it alone if I don't know what I'm doing. I have an 08 Uly that has a lean surge in it since day one. Four weeks old and 1300 miles later the interactive exhaust module(dealer calls it) is faulty. "Check Eng Light" appears constantly. I asked if this may have been a contributing cause of the lean surge. Dealer indicates it is. Do you agree?. I would jump on the 02 sensor immediately for this issue. Love the bike. Its a hoot and one of the most enjoyable machines I've ridden in my life. But got to ride it three days only so far. Part on order. Thanks

Gary:

Good to have you here!

Sorry to hear about your surging issue. This is the first 2008 report I've gotten and I'm watching them close . . . I feel my wallet about to be lightened.

The dealer should be able to get any part overnight. If there are any problems, drop me a note or get ahold of Buell Customer Service.

I noticed also that you had a concern, in your profile, about mileage. These bikes typically get outstanding mileage. Let us know if you see changes as you get the bike broken in.

I'm eager to ride a Ulysses sometime.

Shake;
I was very lucky to find a low mileage, 310 miles, RS with the additional solo seat. Have not had it on the road, yet. 15 years of storage can be as bad as active riding, presently getting things in order.
It more than likely will not see the UK. If you get a chance drop a line.

Rsrss, sounds a great bike. My '91 RS hasn't been on the road since I shipped it to the UK. I just can't ride a bike unless it is in perfect shape and this one needs a lot of attention to keep the oil on the INSIDE ! Maybe next year we'll take her for a spin. At the moment I'm just enjoying what little good weather we have on the '97 M2.

My RS was dripping a bit of oil from the rear left end of the swingarm! Unlike the XB units, I DO NOT use my swingarm as an oil storage facility.
I guess I'll have to get that 1/4" of accumulated "road mung" off of the bottom of the engine case and see where the source of that one is.
I will keep the top of the bike pretty clean, as that's that part I can see when I'm riding it - the bottom has been on it's own as far as cleanliness goes.
Some of us grew up with older, lower-tech machinery (my first 6 or 7 Harley's had a hole in the back of the primary as a factory designed-in place for oil to leak from!) and oil leaks are not usually an object of great concern. At least 'til they become oil spews.
Keeps 'em from rustin' -so to speak.
You CAN ride them if they are leaking a bit, if they leak a LOT, maybe that calls for some action.
If those early bikes STOPPED leaking - you were out of oil.

Trust me, this one's just dripping. I'm de-greasing every single part as I strip it bit by bit. Oil has soaked into all the electrical connectors, wiring harness etc.... It'll take me sometime, but it'll be perfect when it's finished. It looked great till I started taking the bodywork off.

I've never owned a bike yet (since 1973) that has had an oil leak and this isn't going to be any different to the others!
