Well, the bike is ready and the trailer is packed for my first trip to Maxton. I am taking the long route there and spending a week on vacation first before heading down to NC.

I will post some pictures if things go well, but I am running MPS-1650 with a X1 and S&S 100" engine. The bike is pretty much throw away parts that I have collected. Wish me luck. Anyone else going?

Jeff

Well, everything went great. I got 2 records, MPS/PG and MPS/PF 1650. 165 and 160. I just ran gas in the fuel class. I think it would have gone faster today, but we got rained out. It was 93 degrees on Saturday and 80 today. The air temp was worth 5 mph.

Thanks for the congratulations.

Here are some of the highlights of the racing part of the trip.

By the time we got to the Maxton Jill and I had been on the road for 9 days checking out Niagara Falls, New York City and Washington DC. We picked up Tim Culver at the Charlotte air port at about 12:30 am early Saturday morning and then drove another 2 hours to the hotel. We got in late and I was beat, but still couldn’t sleep because I was excited to get to the track in the morning.

We got up early and headed to the track. After getting the rookie tour of the layout of the track, I made a 125 and 150 mph pass to work up through the license classes. The bike felt great and I was ready to go for it.

I made a few passes in Modified Partially Streamlined Pushrod Gas / 1650cc (MPS-PG 1650) and bumped the record from 153 to 157 mph. Then we switched to the Fuel class which had an existing record of 158. By the end of the day, we had bumped that to 160.

So, by the end of Saturday, I had 2 records at 159 and 160. It had been very hot and humid, about 95 so it wasn’t great weather for HP. I had hoped to go a little faster, but it just wasn’t happening. We changed gearing and the AF ratio looked good.

Sunday morning, the plan was to run the bike just like we finished up on Saturday. Right away, I went 165 mph in the nice cool 80 degree morning air. After an oil change and class change to try to bump the other record, we were back on the starting line. We waited a half hour for the track crew to clean up a scattered drive shaft. Unfortunately by then, the weather closed in and it started pouring down rain. We hung out at the starting line for awhile, but eventually the track officials called the event.

It would have been nice to see how the bike would have responded to some changes in the cool air and to pull the fairing off and go for a couple more open records, but I am very happy with what I got done.

The last trip down the track was in the pouring rain at about 10 mph in 1-2 inches of water.

The atmosphere and people down there were great. The ladies working the computers wanted to know if I would be back in September, I said I couldn’t make it because of the baby that’s on the way. They said that’s too bad and that I should come any way. I thought that was pretty cool. Just a bunch of people who like going fast.
