Well, Geoff qualified 5th, Aaron made 10th, and Cory got 11th. Let's hope they're pulling out all the stops for today's race.

http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/hayes-retains- pole-position-for-2013-ama-pro-superbike-season-fi nale-at-mazda-raceway-laguna-seca/

There were some interesting comments from Geoff May after New Jersey:

quote:

Meanwhile, May picked up a ninth and seventh on the weekend. The Erik Buell Racing squad coaxed more power from the works EBR 1190RS machine, but that has created its own set of problems that need to be sorted.

"We've got more grip and more power," May said. "Now we've got to find a better tire package so we make the tire last. The other guys up front aren't having the problem. You look at their tires after the race and they look mint. We're missing something and we've got to look at the data and make a fix."

I wonder if they learned something useful since then? I guess we'll see today.

Well, damn. That's what it says:

Best finish this season for Cory West though; good for him.

May had some kind of problem during the morning warm up while attempting a practice start. The brakes locked up or something and he crashed and damaged the bike.

I guess they did not get it all right before the start. He started late and I noticed something hanging off the back of the bike as he came though turn 2.

Cory was having grip problems on Saturday when Dunlap put everyone on a new type of tire so he was unable to better his Friday time.

They made some suspension changes for Sunday and evidently it worked.

1. Thank God everyone is OK!
2. Cory and Aaron get gold stars for filling in the gap!
3. My heart goes out to Geoff with a gold star too, dealing with a DNS/DNF! Been there.

I missed the race on line and of course TV but was very pleased to see the EBRs in front of the Orange things from Europe. I am also pleased to see four twins (a little slack cut for the Orange bikes) in a row ESPECIALLY ahead of the Suzukis. Erik, I am sure, is proud of the effort and depth with which the EBR folks competed today and the the whole race year. A fine job getting the 1190RS out the door, onto the track and now...... into a show room nearby.

The "Orange" 11 was in 3rd until running out of gas on final corner. Hopped off and PUSHED bike down straight to still finish 7th! Nice job by Fillmore.

Gutted about Geoff. He would have been up there for sure.

I knew Herrin would become champ eventually.
Unfortunately not because he is better then Hayes but because he had less mechanical issues during the Saxon.
Nice to see the EBRs and KTMs put a good show. Fillmore has done great for. KTM

Here's what EBR had to say about the race on Facebook last night:

quote:

Crazy day at Laguna with all kinds of surprises. Wish the race had been televized, but at least it can't be "spoiled". Some good, some bad. Best news of the day was Cory West who finished 4th, Aaron right behind in 5th. Worst was Geoff, who was ready for his best ride of the year but had a bizarre issue with the new electronics on the warm-up and was unable to start. Incredibly frustrating. But that's how racing goes sometimes.

Anyone know why the race was not televised?
Disappointing.

Anyone know why the race was not televised?

Because it was run by DMG, who have so far managed to ruin the series even more than the AMA every managed.

The phrase 'couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery' certainly springs to mind!

Rumour has it that Dorna are looking to poach the AMA series from DMG, and they would without doubt do a much better job (although it would probably be populated entirely by Spanish riders!).

As to May's DNS, actually he did start because I saw him come by turn 2 late on the first lap with something hanging from the rear of his bike. The race announces speculated it was his transponder. If so perhaps it was not working causing him not to be scored. Also I believe he started out of the pits.

Also I recall seeing him running with the back markers later in the race, but I could be mistaken.

"I wonder if they learned something useful since then? I guess we'll see today."

I know that there was some relearning going on after Saturday's qualifying because Dunlap made everyone switch to a diffent type tire on Saturday. I know Cory was having grip problems on the new tire and perhaps Geoff also as they both went a bit slower on Saturday.

Cory made some suspension changes for Sunday and it brought back the grip. He told me that he felt he could have attacked the 5 rider group he was on the back of earlier, but decided to save his tire for later. Looks like it was a good strategy.

Inasmuch as this AMA Superbike race was not televised, here is the live audio commentary that was recorded at the track inside the LuvShak (complete with barking dogs) accompanied by a slideshow of EBR related stuff. It's almost like listening to the radio, but with pictures.
Enjoy:

Here is my text message call of Cory's awesome ride. BTW Clark crashed trying to pass Cory back after Cory passed him going into the corkscrew.

I wish I had been sitting at the top of the corkscrew as I believe 3 of the 4 passes he made were there. I remember years ago when Cory was racing in the 250 class he went up to the corkscrew to watch the WSBK race and learned an inside move that Ben Bostrom used. That knowledge is still paying off today.

Riohank, it was good seeing you at the LuvShak in Laguna.

We're all proud of Cory's race finishing in the top five along with Aaron.

I enjoyed meeting you all on Saturday, but I wasn't quite up to the climb on Sunday so I watched from turn 2 which was not far from my truck and I needed to get on the road ASAP after the AMA Superbike race. I had an appointment in Mojave, Ca that evening.

I told Cory that he needs to pay me to come watch him race. I have only been to 2 of his races in the last 2 years, the 2011 Daytona 200 where he got 2 nd and this one.
